Re: 67 GMC rescue
Thanks for all the comments! I bought it to flip, but I’m really starting to like this one. Guess I’ll tag it and drive it a while - at least until the next one comes along!
68Orange - VIN is CS.

Everybody who ever ran one said the GMC V6s would drive straight up a tree. They lasted a long time, but there never developed an aftermarket for performance parts for the V6s. Rebuilding one stock became very expensive. Perhaps if not for Jack Clifford the straight six inLines would be in the same boat-anchor status. With some mild modifications an L6 can outperform a stock V8 with a bigger displacement. A 292 weighs 457 lbs. 350 = 545. 305 V6 = 795. 351 V6 =860. 250 L6 = 423.

Re: 67 GMC rescue
I've got it down as 860. I don't really remember where I got my data from. Mostly from posts on truck forums. I am open to correction if someone has weighed these engines on a scale. That weight must include cast-iron intake and exhaust manifolds, carb, distributor, HB, waterpump and fan + belts, plugwires and an engine block full of oil and coolant.
By contrast, the Pratt and Whitney R-985 SC-G Wasp Jr, 9-cylinder aircraft radial only weighs 864 lbs.

Re: 67 GMC rescue
I had a 60 GMC with the 305 V6 in it and it ran great. Previous owner told me of all the heavy loads he pulled with it and how it would “out-lug a Chevy 350 any day!” I did think about the V6 option, but I want to keep it like it came. Probably lots cheaper that way too.

Re: 67 GMC rescue
Not many '67 GMCs got V8s at all. It was the transition year as far as the beginning of GMC and Chevy having same engine options, '69 being last year for V6. I would have done the same with putting the 6 back in that out came with. Just saying how cool a find would be to be a basic Fenderside with few options but with the somewhat rare (these days) V6

Re: 67 GMC rescue
The L6 thing is about good enough... all you need. And in this case I think it's about returning the truck to how it was built. What I don't get is do a V8 swap just to end up with a 305??

Re: 67 GMC rescue
GMC pickups got the 283 and 327 as an option in March of '67, someone posted a copy of the service bulletin announcing the V-8's here years ago. GMC Suburbans and panels offered Small Blocks at the beginning of the 1967 model year and dropped the V-6's at the same time.
Yes, 351's are that heavy!
