Part or fix and sell?

I bought these two trucks yesterday, both mostly rust free. ‘84 C20 and ‘79 C10. The C10 needs an engine, and the C20 needs a passenger window along with some minor engine work. I’m debating parting them or fixing them and selling them. I’m leaning toward fixing them and moving them along.

What do you square body regulars think?

Re: Part or fix and sell?

Fix andsell the 84 part the 79. Do you have any family or close friends in a salt state? Sounds crazy but hauling them north to sell would get you a lot more cash. There are a few guys up here that go down to TX OR AZ load up there trailers and resell up here. You would be shocked what they get for a pair of doors or a rust free cab or bed.

Re: Part or fix and sell?

I grew up in northern VA, I know a few people who bring them back that way, it is crazy the money they bring. I’m not in position for a road trip right now unfortunately, although it’s definitely crossed my mind. I was planning to bring a K30 cab and front clip back to my dads place in VA last fall but covid wrecked that.

Re: Part or fix and sell?

First & most important question...Do you have proper paperwork (titles) for them? That would be the deciding factor to me. Lorne

Re: Part or fix and sell?

Got the 79 home today, hope to get the 84 later this week or next weekend. Pretty good shape for 42 years young... original paint and only minor rust pinholes in the front fenders and a couple really small pinholes in the rockers. Floors and supports as a solid as they were in ‘79. Very very worst of the rust is the drivers front fender. Most everything appears to be there except for the engine. Distributor, radiator, engine accessories etc are all there. Might put it on the trucks for sale section of the board as is and see what happens, I know where to get good used vortec 350’s for dirt cheap too so if I need to I’ll go that route.

Re: Part or fix and sell?

I almost bought a brand new 1980(?) K10 in Taos that same brown color as the 79 C10. It was solid brown, though. It had a 250 six and a four speed and not even a radio.

But I couldn't get them to deal to suit me. So I went back up to Colorado and got a white K10 with 350 and 4 speed for about $500 less difference with my 73 K20. It was a nice pickup but I would have been better off just having the transmission rebuilt in my 73, and buying more gas.

Re: Part or fix and sell?

Here’s a few better shots of the 84 C20 silverado. Drug it home today. I also picked that vortec 350 up yesterday. Hope to start working on the ‘79 soon. As for the C20, It’s all there, no rust real straight except for 1 dent in the roof and one in the bedside behind the drivers rear tire. I’ll probably throw new carpet, seat cover, and some other interior stuff in this one and see what happens. I might hold onto it for a while.

Re: Part or fix and sell?

It’s actually a 350/350 combo, it’s got 6.2 badges on the fenders so I’m guessing it was a diesel when new. The 350 is an upgrade I’m not complaining lol.

If it had originally been built with a 454, it would have had a full-float rear axle. This one only has a semi-float axle, so it must have been built with a small block or a diesel.

That's my understanding, at least.

Okay, well the underhood picture just looked like wide (BB) valve covers.

And yeah in my mind a semi float just isn't a real 3/4 ton.

Re: Part or fix and sell?

It’s got an 87+ block in it with center bolt valve covers is probably why it looks different.
