1962 GMC Belly Pan; Is this a factory piece?

Good evening All;

I have a 1962 GMC and I found this piece of sheet metal under the radiator.
I have not seen these on other trucks and thought it might be a fabricated piece, so I was ready to through it away.

I reinstalled it to show how I think it was installed but it might be reversed.

Is it a factory piece to help with cooling?!

That was my guess. So does anyone have this piece under their truck?

Thanks for any input,

I've seen them on older Chevy cars but not on this series truck. But that doesnt mean much.

I wonder what the reason was for it. If it had anything to do with getting better mpg's and it worked....I should make one since we're almost to 4 bucks a gallon around here now.

I believe it’s a rock guard I don’t think they were worried too much about aerodynamics back then or gas mileage when these trucks were new a gallon of regular gas was around $.24 a gallon in 66 I was in Wichita Kansas working on a natural gas pipeline there was a gas war going on you could by a gallon for premium gas for $.12 😂 LMAO Regular I think was $.9 cents
