Got a 348 for my 61

So I just got a 348 with a tri-power intake for my 61 step side and I'm just wondering if there's anything important I should know about these engines before I get started with the rebuild. If anyone knows of any good books or websites about these it would be a big help.

Re: Got a 348 for my 61

I stuffed a 409 into my truck at one time and for clearance I had to nudge the firewall on the passenger side to be able to remove the valve cover. I used a hydraulic spreader.

Re: Got a 348 for my 61

Well I'm reviving this old thread because I finally got this engine set into this truck and there are some problems.

The big one is that using the stock mounts for the bell housing/transmission I can't get the left cylinder head on. It hits the firewall before the rear dowel pin lines up.

We are thinking about making a custom spacer set to move the engine forward but leave the bell where it belongs. This would be a 2 part set. One spacer for between the block and bell and one for between the crank and flywheel.

What do you guys think?

My 2 cents worth..
either modify firewall or move engine mounts forward
Not saying spacers wont work, but it sure won't be ideal....how thick of spacer are you talking?

Unbolt engine and trans from mounts, tilt, install head, tilt back and see what hits. Fix that, bolt it down.

Well it looks like I won't need a spacer after all.
I figured out that I can get both valve covers on. The right one is not easy but it does fit.
As for the left head hitting the firewall, I forgot that I haven't got the new cab support bushings installed yet so we'll see what it looks like after I do that.
