Muffler suggestions?
Stock manifold in the truck, has the six, 292, 5 speed trans. Also have the 2-1/2” header pipe coming off the manifold.
Probably taking it to the muffler shop this weekend. Would like to get suggestions for a muffler, and maybe some “dos and don’ts”.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
Really depends on what sound your looking for and price range. Silent\ stock \ bit louder than stock etc. For just a general muffler that you dont want a bunch of noise from and doesn't cost arm and leg I like Thrush turbo or the Hush Thrush.
On the turbo muffler they also make a longer case version for bit more noise reduction. 17715 is 2.5" in\out with 14" long case 17718 is 2.5" in\out with 20" long case |

Re: Muffler suggestions?
I'd get a stock-ish type like a Walker Quietflow located under the bed with a tailpipe out the back. For more noise use a "turbo" muffler and for less noise add a resonator to the tailpipe.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
Yeah, I guess quieter is better. It already sounds like a loud mail-truck, should be quieter.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
Are these 292 motors loud? As far as running; compared to other motors?

Re: Muffler suggestions?
My thinking is that sixes seem to have a tone to them that can make them seem louder than they really are.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
Well, I’m hoping a quiet muffler, professionally installed will make my ride quieter. Cuz it’s loud now.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
I'm the kinda guy who doesn't really want to hear the exhaust at all so I found the addition of a resonator to the tailpipe to be the "icing on the cake".

Re: Muffler suggestions?
A resonator is just a tail pipe, right? Like the section that goes over the axle and exits out the side?

Re: Muffler suggestions?
It's probably too big (pipe diameter) for your truck, but the Cadillac mufflers are pretty quiet. If it'll pass the exhaust from 500 Cu In through one muffler, it should work for your truck. A resonator is just a short little muffler.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
Muffler volume quiets down the truck among other things like engine compression, and headers vs exhaust manifolds.
A used modern OEM muffler will flow well, and quiet down you truck nicely. Plus you can getnthem with a resonator for about $150. That would be my budget option if I was not looking for sound quality. |

Re: Muffler suggestions?
no, it's more like an auxiliary muffler resembling a glass pack or a straight through style muffler made to dampen the sound frequencies that get through the main muffler. Mine are made by a company called Vibrant.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
And boy do they work. I have walker sound FX mufflers and Vibrant resonators. Sounds like a healthy Buick.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
The round one.
I'd have to log onto Summit and go through twenty receipts there to find it, suffice it to say it works. I didnt place it at the end however, I placed it before the mufflers.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
Took it to Plaza Muffler - I think they did a great job. Kept the same muffler; they just welded up the leaks and made a new header pipe. $156.
I can’t complain, no more exhaust leaks.

Re: Muffler suggestions?
Looks like he got you all fixed up. That muffler looks like it's more than up to the job too. The bolted flange is a nice touch. I hope the old mail truck sound is gone now.
