Steering linkage, R & P question
I have what I'm told is a Camaro rack and pinion on my truck, maybe 2000 vintage, not sure. I cannot find a steering universal to mount to it. The shaft measures 5/8", is smooth, no splines, shaped something like a DD but the flats are not equal, and it has a notch for a clamp type connecter. I can find splined 5/8" universals and 3/4" smooth universals but can't find 5/8" smooth. Need 3/4" DD on the other end.
Did this originally have a rag joint attached to the shaft? If so I can't use that as I don't have space to accommodate one now. Any suggestions?

Re: Steering linkage, R & P question
You may end up out at the wrecking yard taking a steering shaft off a donor car.
I'm not finding anything that says it is an exact fit. This is a photo of a 2000 Camaro rack from an add.

Re: Steering linkage, R & P question
The stock steering shaft that bolts to the rack looks like this Ebay item.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/12463372739....c101113.m2108 That has a DD shaft that you could mix and match with a female DD upper piece and aftermarket U joint. There is also this style that doesn't have the rag joint but I don't see a DD shaft. https://www.ebay.com/itm/32477562130....c101113.m2108 The same style with a better photo. https://www.ebay.com/itm/25510757667...wAAOSw2khhJYRF

Thanks Robert. That looks like a workable solution with or without modification. Trip to junk yard in the offing or ebay if I get lazy.

Re: Steering linkage, R & P question
Follow up after junk yard visit.
Pics of an intermediate shaft I found in the aftermath of someone disassembling an IFS. Parts kinda spread around but I think this came from an Oldsmobile but can't tell you the model. I was so happy to find it I paid no attention to surrounding environment. The one end fits perfectly on my Camaro rack and the other end I can cut and weld on a section of 3/4" DD to work with aftermarket DD u-joints. Stampings if helpful for id are "J R" and "7847126MC5" or NC5 or KC5.
