Re: Broken drop spindle
I'd bet money that those r an AIM product spindle. I had Chassis Tech spindles on my truck about 10 years ago when I first got my truck and the same happened to one of mine... Getting in the freeway I noticed it was hard to pick up speed, like the brakes were on. About a half mile later, SNAP! Pulled over slowly (luckily) to see what happened; driver side wheel cambered in, upper control arm bent, hole in center cap of newish rim where the broke end of shaft was sticking into, and gouges all around inside lip of wheel where it rubbed around the control arm when it broke. The only thing that kept the wheel on was the caliper holding the rotor (hense the feeling of my brakes being on). So back to the first sentence, I'd guess it's any of AIMs branding of spindle. Lesson learned, that was the first and last time I have ever bought anything from them. Spend the few extra bucks and get a quality piece that'll last.

Re: Broken drop spindle
these spindles get hot with out the right kind of wheel bearing grease? over tightened wheel bearings? sounds like there using a flimsy steel instead of a hard substance that was forged and produced to handle it or they did and didnt put the right polish surface on these, with naked eye you cant tell the small imperfections on a new product that could possibly turn into something bigger quick. first things first, gonna have local my machine shop re polish the new DJM spindles i have before installation, have em ex rayed before and then after. that way i know my pieces wont over heat and break, sad thing is, IF it is over heating thats the billion dollar question...

Re: Broken drop spindle
Had been looking through drop spindles myself awhile back, and seen some that looked like this from a few places. Kicked about the idea of trying them for a bit, but I already have a tough time trusting China steel.
I dunno if its stickied elsewhere in the forum, and I actually looked a little bit for more people having problems with cheap spindles in this section, but didnt find much. It would be nice if people could easily find information such as this. It could save someone more than just money. |

Re: Broken drop spindle
OH ONE MORE THING. My DJM drop spindles still have the fine metal from when they polished it all over the new spindle. my hands turn grey after touching them, so make sure they are very well cleaned before Installation, small particles can and will damage the spindle races surfaces, and cause major catistrophic failure in esclading driving events.

Re: Broken drop spindle
This is a pretty old thread but I just had a spindle snap on my truck. It is a 65 but I have 75 front steering components under it. They are AIM spindles. I put them on 20 years ago but didn't drive my truck for about 7 of them. It snapped on my son when he was putting into the parking lot at work. I will be getting some CPP spindles now. This happened yesterday.

Re: Broken drop spindle
Duuude. Thanks for updating us. Seems very clear that it's important to get rid of this brand if it's on any of our trucks. Thanks for taking the time to post this in the square body section. Can we see a picture of your truck anyway? ; )
From the detailing on the wheel I'm guessing the truck looks pretty cool. |

Re: Broken drop spindle
It's ok. Need to do some work to the bed. That is coming soon, but since this happened, I will be rebuilding the front end. seems I have a bad ball joint on the right side plus the are original to 1975.

Re: Broken drop spindle
Cool, thanks. It sits nice, and when it's all blue, it'll be really sharp!
