hood not sitting all the way down

when i shut my hood it doesn't sit all the way down where the hinges are. the hood sits higher that the cowl and fender on that end, the front sits down fine where the latch is. would this be hood hinges problem?

That is one of the main signs of worn out hinges. You might be able to adjust the problem away, if not I would bet they are worn out.

Yep hinge problem, But like stated you may be able to adjust the hinges to make the hood fit better at the cowl.

Raise the hood to it's normal height and hold it there. Now loosen the two rear bolts that hold the hinge to the fender. Now push the hood up another few inches--and while holding it up like this, tighten the rear bolts. You are preloading the springs. Now carefully lower the hood watching for rear hood to cowl contact. This preloading will lower the rear of the hood so it will line up with the cowl and fenders. Huck

I don't think it actually "preloads" them but rotates the rear of the hinges down.

I've used the method that Locdoc quotes above and it does work!

Just don't bother with repro hinges if you do want to replace. I've never heard of anything good about those. Plenty of tight originals out there for alot less dough!

I find more time than not that simply giving them a good lube-up solves the problem.

If yours are shot, you should be able to find good used ones.

I heard that Ford hinges are always worn out.....due to the amount of times that you have to lift a hood on a Ford truck as compared to a GM

Be sure to work the hood up and down real good to get the lube worked in well. Make sure you lube all points. You will feel the action get easier.

I just did the loosen of the hinges and push the hood all the way up and tighten up hood lines up perfect now. I also found that two of the bolts were not tight art all.

Last time I had the hood off was in 08...good thing I checked..

If the method above doesn't work, the hinges are still available from GM:

Click on the "restoration" tab and follow the steps from there. Just click on "show all categories" at the end and they're near the top.

I bought mine a couple years ago. They must be getting low on the LH side because they're about $25 more than the RH side. It was the same when I bought mine as well.

I think you heard wrong. it's 73 to 80's chevy's and GMC's.. even the hood breaks and look like s***T

Well I tried the above earlier today but perhaps I need a helper push up while I have the back bolts loosened up and then tighten them down.

On the plus side, I lube up the hinges and I guess it needed it, as the hood really moves up/down better. Matter of fact, the "hood popper" I installed really pops up the hood really good now!

Did that as step one, it 100% helped the movement of my hood (which I didn't actually expect). But I am going to revisit this when I can get some help. One person holding up the hood, pushing up - while I deal with the bolts.

Lastly, I misread the "loosen the two rear bolts" - I read that as two bolts across the two hinges, not the two back bolts on *each* hinge. One of those bolts on the back are kind of hidden, I didn't see it until just now in the garage looking for the other back one. Silly me.

Had my daughter help, though she needed a ladder to reach the top of the hood to hold it up a bit.

1. Open hood.
2. Check lube of all bits of latch - I say do this anyways unless you remember lubing the hinges recently.
3. Lossen *two* back bolts on each hinge. One you really have to stick your head around to see, its fairly hidden. To make it even more fun, on the passenger side, the blower fan blocks the hidden bolt. I was able to get just enough bite with my 3/8 ratchet with short extension.
4. raise up on hood, don't need to give it a lot of force. At this point I did see the hinge plate move/pivot on the front bolt (that you don't loosen).
5. Tighten things up and good idea to check that front too.

I wouldn't say it 100% perfect - more like 85~90% perfect on the drivers side and nearly dead on on the passenger side. But I'll take it since it isn't as noticeable as it was. It was always worse off on the driver side.

I am not sure if it is kosher to do one side at a time.... but I don't feel like loosening both sides to try and get a wee bit more on the drivers side.

Edit: I should have taken a before photo but here she is now. I am actually very happy with how the hood is laying down now. The hood is slightly still up but night and day from before.
