Might you recall the 3M sided tape you used? Was it actually their mounting tape? It seems kind of thick but I suppose photos on Amazon can be misleading. I actually have some 3M double-coat 665 tape - which is thin but I don't think it would be strong enough.

well, i got some 3M Super Strength Molding Tape, 03614, 1/2 in x 15 ft from O'Riley's. I had a $5 reward and figured give it a go.
The stuff worked great and its a little squishy, so I think the aluminum overlay went on very well.
