Aftermarket door handles on '67 doors - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

looking at the inside of my doors it looks like you can change the angle of the holes with a drill bit or grind down the "L" type backing plate in the door to make the bolts on the aftermarket handles line up. Is there something I'm missing? Has anyone tried this?

Ya gotta do something 'cause they don't make '67 handles; they're mounted differently.

Can someone please post a picture of the backing plate inside a 69-72 door so I can see what it looks like.

Yes. They have at least 4 spot welds holding them in. I got lucky on this one most of the spots didn't hold so I only had to drill one.

I put aftermarket door handles on mine with no changes to the door, the bolts were just hard to line up.

I got the drivers side door done. First I tried to woller out the holes with a drill. That did NOT work as it only opened up the hole in the door skin and NOT the backing plate. Finally I used my 3" cut off wheel to cut slots in the backing plate (there is just enough room to get it in there). That did the trick. I used the longer factory bolts and added a larger washer instead of using the ones that came with the door handles. To help test fit the door handle while I did the modifications I took two bolts and cut the heads off and installed them in the handle as a guide.

are all the aftermarket handles like this? I know they have poor build quality, but I neverr heard about this.

They are all like this no matter whom you purchase them from. They are not made for the 67's. they will advertise that they are and they will work but you have to make them work.

If you look at mrh33916 pics, the 68-72 handle is on the left, it has the bolts angled into the handle.

The 67 handle is on the right, the bolts go straight into the handle. Another quirky, and annoying, "67 only thing."

Couldn't you just fill the holes with "magic putty" or that stuff that claims to be as strong as steel, then drill and tap the holes?

Well... either way it sucks. I have a '67 and need new door handles! Maybe I'll just use the pitted 42 year old ones for a while.

Maybe they'll make it another 42...

Hey kev2809, I just noticed that you live in Rosenberg. I live about 2 miles out. I don't recall seeing your truck around town though. I never would have thought that another board member would turn up that close to me. Cool. This site is great!

I used to have a stack of 67-only handles, just because of this. Of course, now that I've moved into my own house, all of the parts I had stored at my folks place have been scattered, probably don't have a handle left....

lol, ya i noticed that after i posted. i live like a mile from pleak, right down the street from the corner store that splits 2218 and 36. there is a good reason you havent seen it around town, it doesnt run lol. plan on getting it rolling beginning of the new year though, hopefully i can get my body work and suspension done before then

I recently rebuilt my doors using a whole bunch of random pieces. I think that I used 67 handles on a 71 door. I dont have seals behind them and they dont really bolt up tight. I probably could tighten them more but worry about stripping out the pot metal. Now knowing that there is a difference I might pull the handles off and see if I have any other complete handles that will work.
