Rear gas tank really has me stumped
Maybe what I want to happen isn’t possible? I would like a tank that fits between the last 2 crossmembers and doesn’t require me moving the last member. Im using the stock suspension. I would like it to fill from one of the fenders or the license plate. Really trying to avoid a bed fill. What I keep finding is ppl using a mustang tank and running it out the plate but they all seem to have upgraded rear suspension and they move the rear crossmember.
I found a build in here a couple years ago where someone ran it out the fender. They modified one of the bed supports to fit over the tank which stuck up above the frame a little. So is it possible to do what I want or us it one or the other? Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
I'm thinking that what you are looking for is a 67/ 72 Blazer tank.
This is just an example for show and tell because they have the measurements. 15 inchs wide, 13 inches tall and 27 inches long. This is the kit with the short neck that is what you want. https://www.classicparts.com/1967-72...ctinfo/23-933/ This is just the tank making the kit a pretty decent deal. https://www.classicparts.com/1969-72...ctinfo/23-932/

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
Some guys also use the S-10 two door Blazer gas tank. 19 gallons and it has the fitting for the fuel gauge that works with Fi in the tank fuel pumps if that is something that might be needed. I drug an 88 Blazer that a guy gave me one time and only wanted two things, th gas tank and the rear axle. Gas tank was missing and the ring and pinion on the rear axle was blown up. Gave the whole thing to my buddy at the local wrecking yard.

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
It will hang down to where it can probably be seen from the rear if someone is looking but it will set higher than the the bottom of the axle center by a fair amount.

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
mock that up before you order a tank. I had a k5 blazer tank and it hung way to low for my liking. I'm not sure which size tank that was but 13" depth sounds about right.
Ended up using a '50 ford sedan tank: side fill, nice and shallow, it fit my c10 frame with just flipping over the rearmost 'Z' cross member. I don't think it would fit the frame shown above without moving one of the cross members. |

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
That is what he wants to avoid = moving crossmembers.
The tank will hang down and be visible but it won't be in danger of hitting anything as long as he doesn't decide to go rock crawling. You will still have a couple of inches or more of the center section of the rear end showing from the rear. I've got a 20 gallon aluminum tank designed for a Ford Conversion van under my 48 and it hangs down and is visible but it hasn't ever been an issue except being visible.

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
i had to c-notch for the filler neck, this is how i did it.
i did move my x-member back a little to accommodate my tank what ever you do, make it easy to drop the tank i've changed fuel pumps and had the line to the pump rupture both times i had to drop the tank need to drop it again for the fuel gauge hanging up if your truck is lowered, put the filler on top of the fender mine is side fill and very low, it's also slow fill

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
This is one I saw last saturday that has a nice filler door blended in but as Ogre suggested it might be a tad low for efficiant filling. you want the fuel to run down hill to the tank from the nozzle when you have it in the filler neck. A stock 47/48 in the bed side filler can be a pain to fill with a fast running pump.

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
As far as how high you mount the tank I'd figure out where the bottom of the cross sill will be and be at least a half inch below it.
It's nice to be able to drop the tank out the bottom and could be needed if you have the pump for FI in tank but otherwise it isn't an absolute must have. It just makes a lot more work if you ever have to pull the tank. A lot more work meaning that you have to lift the complete box off the frame to get to the tank. As you do now want to move the crossmemember that goes into the hazards of the plan thing and so be it and as long as your tank unit never goes bad or the sock on the pickup tube if there is one never plugs up life is wonderful.

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
My truck won’t be lowered. I mounted it low enough that I only had to notch a bed sill 3/4”. My plan is to put the fill in the fender. I did have to notch the frame some to allow for the neck. I also did mount it so that I could drop it down and not have to remove the bed. I didn’t have to move a crossmember. Very happy with how it fits. I got it plumbed in now so no longer running off a gas can. I do believe I will have issues with the gas gauge working correctly but thats a problem for another day. This sending unit is 0-90 ohms.

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
I went completely overboard on my rear tank, but I have C4 suspension...so I opted to remove the rear crossbeam and build a structure at the very back. If you are keeping the stock leafs, can the stock cross be still located further to the rear knowing the frame tapers out to the rear to the back bumper. This is a 52 Chevy sedan tank with a custom made inner bed shield. And a stock bumper will still bolt to the frame.

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
I've tossed the idea around of just mounting the gas filler in the fender like you would see in a 40 Ford pickup and borrowing their idea.
I'd cut the piece out of a donor cab to have the right lip on the hole and weld it into the fender and use a new factory grommet to hold the hose and then find a real nice locking gas cap with a Chevy emblem on it. https://www.classicparts.com/1938-71...ctinfo/23-157/ It's just and idea that should work and pretty well pass off as original to those who are casual observers.

Re: Rear gas tank really has me stumped
I did fender mount using an AD cab filler neck grommet, I just cut a hole then turned the hole edge up a bit with pliers, little at a time. Nice new soft aftermarket grommet fit in and conformed to fender shape easily.
After i did it and bought a locking cap I wished I had put it lower on the fender, the way it is the key slot is facing up and any rain on the slot will get into the tank. That cap you posted is cool, I wonder if it would drain outwards or inwards. The square gas flap posted above looks better than I thought one would, I decided against a flap thinking it would look out of place. |
