New Door mirror mounting

How did you go about lining up to drill mirror holes for brand new doors. Will be using the stock style 3 hole mirrors from lmc.

The new doors do have the reinforcement but how are you figuringout where to drill holes from outside.

I though about cutting down a center punch and trying to push from inside to give me an idea. Tried looking for a template but came up empty handed so far.

Or putting a jnut on the bracker and threading in a bolt by hand til it touches the door skin. Tap it with a hammer from outside to get a small imprint, back off screw a turn or two and center punch from outside.

I just did this on a client truck, if you check, the factory holes are not square with anything, I checked three different trucks, all the same. I moved the mirrors back a bit to get a better view without the windwing post being an obstruction and leveled the two lower holes to the body line. Epoxy in some weldnuts and its a simple one man job for removing…easier to wax/polish/ buff with mirror removed.
Maybe I’m too picky….

Yes, there may be one there, it will most likely be just like the three vehicles that I checked and be crooked as well, if you want 100% factory that’s your best bet…

Appreciate the feedback, will be attatching a nut somehow so I can take mirrors off easily if needed.

They dont have to be perfect just want to use the inner bracket for some reinforment.

Will likely have someone hold a bolt inside the door and tap the outer skin with a rubber hammer to make a indent to know where to drill.

I used NutSerts to mount my passenger side mirror.

I made a paper pattern of where the driver's mirror was, then flipped it over to locate the passenger holes, then found that the reinforcement inside didn't match.

Having done a LOT of work on my '61, nothing technically lines up on these trucks. I chose not to fret over it. The mirror is mounted.
