cowl induction hoods
was wondering what you guys think of them.... fiberglass or metal.... have you found that they are fairly functional.... dont care to buy one for looks alone.... dont you hate when you look under the hood of a car and see that pretty cowl is plugged up or serves no purpose

I have been looking at them to replace my old rusted out hood. I don't imagine they'd be very functional, unless you built a duct coming from the cowl or something. Being in Oregon, I'm afraid I'll suck in too much water through the cowl..

Patrick Sullivan, I don't know about on our trucks, but on the Camaro's and Chevelle's the design was to suck air from near the windshield. No duct work was necessary.

Camaros and Chevelles had "duct" work that sealed down around the breather.
www.gmcpauls.com has the good steel cowl hoods. Took 20 minutes to line mine up perfect.

i was thinking they might work fairly well or better than stock anyway if you were to use one of those new K&N extreme air filter lids along with the cowl hood.... i do know the goodmark made hood is made with a built in screen which would keep water out and let air in.... i wouldnt want more than 2 or 2-1/2 inches of cowl.... anymore than that would be too much

To me they look good on chevelles and camaros and thats about it.

I don't think watter would be a concern, this was a factory option on muscle cars, and they kept doint it, even the new T/A's get ram air.
Even if you do not seal the air cleaner assembly to the hood, you will get rid of alot of hot air from under the hood. I think this alone is worth some $$. Esp if you run an open air filter...sucking up all that hot air from the headers. Lower air intake temp = more power. |

i really like the price and look of the cowl hood from gmc pauls.... when i decide to get one i think that will be the place.... did yours have the screen 71 chev ?

It isn't screen, it's a block off plate with lots of round holes in it for airflow. I can email you a pic of it.
I think it made an improvement in performance, or it just looks faster.

I tend to think they can be useful. At my old job i discussed this with another engineer (one who'd been thru advanced flow and other fun classes). He said on a truck it could be particularly helpful because of the steep angle on the windshield. You get a nasty little vortex there that a lot of air swirls in. With the cowl all that wind or most of it would flow down the cowl as it would be much easier to do that trying to go straight into a windshield or climbing that big slope up to the roof. Regarding the cooling effects of the air yes that could be a rather nice thing too especially if you've got some hot components running down there. As far as ducting work, not too much is needed i dont think if you have a nice big open air filter, it'll flow right in path.
I'd like to get one eventually and i think fiberglass would be nicer for the weight. only shame is they are so expensive, but hey you only live once...

Is one is fiberglass, it took a few hours to line up.
it does draw air in u can feel it sucking in is one has screen inside and out

I put a steel one on my truck, its reinforced under and has the block out screen with all holes. It fits real nice. My old hood had a nasty crease in it and I was at the car show soooo $400 and bingo new hood. sorry for the small pic I'm still try to figure out this picture posting

right on.... ill definitely be ordering one in the next few weeks.... there goes a paycheck in one shot but it will be worth i think from a performance and asthetic standpoint.... great pic 1970 CST short wide.... thats an awesome truck.... i do believe those 2 inch rise cowl hoods do our trucks justice.... thanks for the example

I also think mudder67 and 72chevylwb's trucks look awesome with the cowl hoods. I definitely have to have one.

No offense to any who disagree (since I think everybody should make their trucks look good for THEM and not me), but I don't think the cowl hoods look good on 2wd stepsides. There's something about the visual 'weight' that makes the trucks look fromnt/top heavy, which is why I will be doing a regular steel hood. And taking a look at blue72stepside's pic and compare to 68 Suburban's pic.
As I said, no offense intended... it's the "eye of the beholder" thing. Kenneth

I've found for me that only certain cowl hoods have the right "look". I definitley think the raised cowl section has to be shaped a certain way for me to like the look.

I have one on my 68. I bought it for looks. Also in the future i now know that a 6.71 supercharger will fit under my hood thanks to the extra room from the cowl. I cant wait to have the truck on the rooad though I'm hoping for next summer

I like them best on a 67/68. The slop seems to flow better. Either way, nice trucks guys!
