71 3/4T Park Brake Cables (D60 Rear)
Having a difficult time finding new "rear" parking brake cables (they are normally sold as "front", "intermediate" and "rear" - but looking specifically for the rear portion that connects from the intermediate cable to the brake backing plate) for the following combo:
71 C20 Long Bed Leaf Springs Dana 60 Ordered them from inline tube, then they called back and said "oops" we can't get them.. Classic Truck Parts and The Truck Shop list them for C10 only. LMC lists them fro 3/4 ton, but for 67-70 only (with leaf springs)... (Cripes, they even have em for LONGHORNS, but not for a standard long bed with leafs in 71. Brothers only lists them up to 1970, then 73 and up (argh). Anyhooooo, is there something ODD about a 71 rear parking brake cable? It's a D60 rear, so it does have the screw-in mount to the backing plate that is specific to a Dana. But, most of the places I called were familiar with that and had that type in stock, but just not for a 71 LWB 3/4t with leafs. I can probably refurbish what I've got, but have been redoing the entire brake and parking brake systems because mine were pretty trashed, and have orderd the front and intermediate ones - so would like to get the rear ones to go with. Was a little frustrated with inline tube... they shipped the rest of my order and sent me an "oh sorry, not in stock, what do you want to do" email. I might not have ordered the front and intermediates if I knew I couldn't get new rears. But, I probably need em anyway, even more than the rears. They did offer to make a custom set, but I didn't even want to know what that was gonna cost. Just wondering if anyone might know where I can find that specific combo's rear park brake cable... Thanks all! |

Re: 71 3/4T Park Brake Cables (D60 Rear)
This may or may not help you..... but if all else fails, some hardware stores can make 'em up on the spot. They have the cable by the foot, and they *might* have different size ends and a press. Had mine done at a local hardware store many years ago and they're still good. Logging supply is another possibility but they probably won't have anything that small. Happy hunting....

Re: 71 3/4T Park Brake Cables (D60 Rear)
Found DORMAN Part # C92421 to match the GM parts catalog number 3955501 for $19.27
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/catalog.php http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinfo.php?pk=358274 http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/x,ca...Cable%2BDORMAN Just not a 100% on the application. Looks like the 68-70 coil application w/396 is the same as the 71-72 C20 127/133 trucks and the 133s had leafs only. Something to consider at this point if a trans. swap is near term you might just want to clean and lube the stock cables if they are not stretched too much. The image below has all three cable applications and lengths for you.

yep, you're right, nothing calls out my application exactly. It specifically avoids it in fact! Ha. Oh well. Maybe that means my truck is "extremely rare".... I'll have to remember that if I ever sell it! Ha.

Actually the 3955501 does call out your truck by not excluding it. The applications listed are all Dana 5500 IIRC. Hope that someone will step up and confirm or correct me on this. The Dorman nuber specifically crosses to this number. Did you ever download the parts manual I have provided links to in the past?

Could try matching uo the overall length to the 39 15/16" specified. The lengths are diffent enough it might clear things up.

Re: 71 3/4T Park Brake Cables (D60 Rear)
Hello Jocko,
Have you tried a used set from the local yards. I have cables still on my trailers with arms and coil springs, don't know if that will help you. Both 8 foot beds. One of them is for sure a Dana. I am not using the cables. Good Luck with the search. R/ Billy

Re: 71 3/4T Park Brake Cables (D60 Rear)
Hey Billy! Sorry, I missed your post here. I have some cables already, but since I'm replacing the front/intermediate ones, wanted just go ahead and replace the whole system. But, short of having a custom set made by sending in my originals, I guess I'll just clean up my current ones and re-use them.
I'm not sure old greenie will ever come out looking like ol blue, but that'd be nice if it did. Speaking of which, I saw that ol blue is up on ebay once again - 3rd time since I sold it - the guy is now asking $25K (!) Kind of ironic considering it hasn't made his reserve on the 2 previous attempts and only bid up to around 15K. But, oh well. Nice meeting you the other day! |
