Key Codes...
What are they? When I got my Resto Package from GM in a cover letter they talk about "Key Codes" are still available for my truck. All I have to do is contact them with proof of ownership. Can anyone explain exactly what that is to me?
Thanks Brian

That's amazing that GM of Canada can give you that 4 digit key code from 30+ years ago. In the US you can go to any GM dealer and they can enter your VIN number after they have proof that it is your vehicle, and retrieve the original key codes, chip resistor type, and all factory installed options including all trim codes. Problem is they only go back to the 1988 model year. Those key codes are the same as what is stamped on the lock cylinder of the ignition and should also fit the doors too. It should work in theory to have a key puched out by that 4 digit code but so many times the lock tumblers are wore down so the new stamp cut keywill not work. Any lock smith can also make a key from that code or they can simply dismantle the lock cylinder to read the tumber code too.

Thanks for the info...oh, and GM of Canada says they can get the key codes from as far back as 1946! That certainly is impressive!

When the vehicles were new, the dealer was supposed to remove the key code inserts off the pair of original keys before giving the new owner the keys. The key code blanks were given to the owner with the paper work as stated in the new vehicle delivery policy from GM. A lot of times the dealer did not remove them and some of the original GM Briggs and Stratton keys will still have that key code insert still in place in the key head. I know my 67 pickup still has that in one of the original keys. And another place the original key code was typed in was on the original purchase order for the vehicle.

If you have an owners manual, check that. Often times the original owner would write those codes in the book. Also, on the lock cylinders themselves, I've seen the code stamped on.
Just take that 4 digit number to any locksmith or GM dealer and they can make a brand new "sharp" set of keys for you. It's the best way as getting keys made by using a key cutting machine will only follow a worn out key but using the codes, the key is made in a device that punches the shape out precisely. If originality is a big issue, you'll most likely have to provide original key blanks yourself. In most cases, replacement key blanks are about all you'll find at the dealers. They will function but will not be "correct" in appearance.

The original codes use to be stamped on the cylinders as well.
GM only uses 1500 different codes for the longest time. I use to do locksmith work....one of my machines has a micrometer on it. Allowing me to take a worn key and add .015 to the old worn key and slowly cut that down to find a good fit on the lock.
