I bought a set of chrome latches at a boat store. They are the exact same set bruce horkey sells for 100 bucks. I gave 50 for my set. They look good, not cheap looking like some contraptions i have seen holding tailgates up.

I have seen a couple of different ways of going about it. One is to weld an eye on the tailgate and one in the bedside right below it. They used a metal pin with a head that dropped through the eyes.
On another one, they used the male part of a seat belt buckle on the tailgate, and the female (push button) part on the bed. Close the gate and latch the buckle...

Chainless tailgate option
It certainly is not the cheapest route to go, but WOW Products makes a nice tailgate latch and support system. Check out www.WOW-PRODUCTS.com. Good hidden latch system with an equally good tailgate support set-up.

My friend has a 56 Ford and he used those slide latches like you would see on an old screen door. the ones where you can push the rod to the left and then turn it down to lock it in the open posistion and then to close pick the little handle up and push it to the right and then turn it down to put it in the locked position.
There cheap like 2 dollars a peice i just put one on a water heater closet door i made today. |

Just saw a 55 truck last saturday that used the seatbelt idea.
Very nice simple install, and they held tight. Only thing he didn't address was no cable to hold the gate in the down position.

Blue as far as something to hold the gate... to go along with the seatbelt latch... use the seat belt itself to hold the tailgate...
