2wd to 4wd...

allright, i think im going to convert the truck from 2wd to 4wd. anyone have a clue how hard this would be? im thinking of just trying to by a 4X4 truck for 1000 and just switching every over. does this sound like a good plan? also i've got a warmed over 454 and i don't like braking rearends/transfer cases. what would be a good T-case to get and front end, i've got my ford 9 out back so im not worried their. Also, sence i have a long bed, what drive shaft would i need or how much shorter would it need to be with the T-case. and another question, would i need to try to find a T-case for a 700R4 or does it matter as long as it was an auto trans? Thanks and i am totally new to 4X4 so i know nothing.

Hey Sanity,

I am working on doing just the oposite.

Converting a 4X4 K5 to 2X4,

I will know within the next few months if it is easy or not. haha

From the research I have done it would be a pretty simple process.

I am selling all my 4X4 stuff now.

TH350 tranny, NP208 transfer case, and soon I will have the 10 bolt front and 12 bolt rear out. I even have a near new (3000 miles) Procomp 31" Mud terrains for sale soon.

As far as a truck is concerned you would have to look at whether or not you have all the tools etc for the conversion.

There is alot of expertise on this board for sure.

Regards,

Stacey

i have all the tools and then some, im mainly wondering on the dificulty of this and what would be the best T-case and Front end to use. i think im going to work hard and get a couple or 4 jobs done so i can get enough money to by a K truck and then convert my C to a K, cause i don't wanna sell my girl, plus i don't think i can.

to back a 454, you'd probably want a NP 205 t-case, and a dana 60 front axle. That's about as heavy duty you're going to get without going to rockwell axles. As far as drive shafts, you'll probably have to get the motor/trans/t-case in place and measure for driveshafts. As far as what you need: a complete front axle with all the steering components, front springs, a way to mount them, shocks & mounts, transfer case with shifter, front driveshaft, shortened rear driveshaft, maybe a new crossmember. I don't know what t-cases will work with the 700, but novak or advanced adapters should have an adapter to adapt the 700 to most transfer cases. some trans have different outputs for 4x4 and 2x4 models too, so you might check into that.

hmm...sounds like alot of work involved in this...but i think i might just be crazy enough to do it, so what did the NP 205 come in as well as the dana 60 front? and does anyone know if the frames are the same between a 2x4 and a 4x4?

There is alot of good info on the ColoradoK5 website on trannys and axles for 4X4,

If you are doing it up to last I would suggest the Danas 60 front 14 bolts/or dana 60 rear.

NP205 is a great transfer case, The 700R4 does not have a great following in the 4X4 world. Most prefer the TH400 for Auto trans or the 465 for the stick trans.

You can find a ton of parts at a Pick and pull yard. I found 2 14 bolts rears in about 10 minutes at the last pick n pull I hit and it was a small one with only about 5 or 6 73-87 model trucks and burbs.

regards,

Stace
