$700 a good deal for Eaton Posi Parts/Labor?

I'll be getting an Eaton Posi installed prolly middle of next week, just wanted to see if you guys thought it was a decent deal.
That guy on Ebay (GearsRUs; Wayne Grubbs) said for $425 shipped to my door, he'd get me the Eaton Posi, & Install kit.
A local shop, who came recommended, quoted me $275 to install the posi.
Sound like a decent deal to you guys?
That guy on Ebay is a real class act, E-mailed me back right away, and was totally upfront with the pricing. (Thanks for recommending him, PhantomDually) The Eaton has the 400# spring pack inside it. (Which is what my friends said I want)

Wayne is the man I bought my posi from him also. To make a story short Wayne could have screwed me for over $800 but was a stand up guy and called paypal to straighten it out for me. Anyway that doesnt sound like too bad of a price, I'm sure you could find someone to install it for less but cheaper is not always better. No more peg leg burnouts now huh

Exactly! Now that I'm back working, I'm going to get this truck finally finished up. Get the Posi in, then fuel cell, put on the drag radials, and see if I can't click off some 14's.

That's where I got my posi and gears from. Super guy. I would buy from again if I needed anything. On the $275 to install, you may want to check around a few more places.

that sounds like alot of money to setup a R&P.. Id personally spend a weekend doing it myself and learning. Its not rocket science! Say it takes him a full 8hrs to set it up, which it wont.. thats $26 an hour! i think I could have it setup in hrs for less tha $275 in parts. but thats just me....

You ever done that kind of a job yourself? Setting up a ring&pinion is no rocket science but it does require a keen understanding of what really needs to be done to do it right the first time.

Btw, Tim i highly recommend you do a quick search on the PowerTrax No-Slip. Read the online reviews it has received and give it a good thought. It requires no alterations to the stock carrier&ring&pinion, and no special tools to install it. You could do it yourself in about 4 hours and spend a lot less money which could be used for something else (No need for install kit, cheaper than the Eaton, no need to have it set up by a pro). The No-Slip doesn't make that annoying sound like the old Lock-Right, it's 100% locker when engaged and has no clutch plates to wear or cones to bottom out.

One other thing that's been mentioned before but i'll say it again:
1. The eaton requires a limited slip additive to the gear oil to reduce friction
2. The powertrax does not
3. While regular gear oil is available everywhere, the posi additive is not
4. With the eaton, every oil change costs extra

I had a Nissan Xterra with limited slip and got the gear oil with the additive at Autozone. Here in the states I think it is pretty much available everywhere.

Unless the manufacturer of the locker specifies otherwise, regular GL4 75W90 will do the trick. A locker like the No-Slip does not use any clutches or a cone forced against the carrier. Posi-Traction or posi is common lingo for these, which base their ability to limit wheel spin on exact friction properties of the clutch plates (or cone), the carrier itself, the spider gears and the gear oil.

you'd be hard pressed to find straight gear oil that didnt meet the api spec for clutch type posi's.. i think the spec is GL-5? The tube of additive is also available but most of the quart or 5 gallon size come pre-mixed for any type of axle...

Are you gonna change the gear also?? If so now is the time!! There is a guy here at home that will do a rear for $125. Thats gears posi and bearings and have it back to you next day. He also does great work. He is a retired machinist and loves cars and trucks. The only catch is you have to pull the rear and bring it to him.

Ahh ha, that's always the catch to cheap jobs. I'm just going to drive my truck over to the shop, with my parts in the seat, and then pick it up when it's done, and leave TWO black marks.

About the black marks.........if you want it to last, break it in the right way and change the fluid after about 500 miles.
