HEY PONT!!!Question
Sorry can't send you email . I'm dealing with a guy who is selling his 1967 4x4 chevy swb the only concerns i have is that it doesn't have power stering and that it has the "old style" closed nuckle stering axle, he wants $4,600 for it. Since I seen yours I'm in love, but does yours have power stering or is it a pain to convert all this stuff?? thanx nic nicholas.trujillo@aquila.com

it is a little harder to find certain parts for the swap. board member Erl was/is putting p/s on his 68 gmc 3/4 ton 4x4 and asked me about my setup. i think the early p/s steering arm is longer than the non-p/s arm, and also is held on with 4 bolts, to accomodate the kingpin bearing design of the closed knuckle axle. in 1970 the design changed, was held on with 3 bolts (due to the change to ball joints), and from then on stayed the same until GM went IFS. the newer 70 up arm will NOT work on the old closed knuckle axle.
good luck!

72Super, sorry I haven't responded sooner but as French mentioned, my puter is dust. Waiting for another motherboard to arrive so I can get back up and running (that's why I haven't posted much lately Mudder).
Power steering was an easy install for me but mainly because I also swapped to a disc front-end and also built crossover steering for the truck. 1969 GMC nailed it exactly with his description of steering arm differences. If you want to add late model power steering yet retain the stock front axle, I believe you will need to fabricate a custom draglink that runs from the newer pitman arm to the older steering arm. A better way to do this swap would be to add a later model disc brake front axle while doing the power steering. As far as mounting the steering box to the frame, you will need to do either of these options due to the buldge on the side of the newer box: 1) heat and indent the frame to clear the buldge or 2) space the box away from the frame with approximately 1/2" spacers. I chose the second option and spaced the box away from the frame. If you need any additional info or if I can help in any way, please don't hesitate to PM me or post back here and I will try to watch this thread every other day or so (at least until I fix my puter). Be sure to let us know if you buy that 67! Rob

No I have not bought it, as of yet . This truck also has manual brakes, therefore; I would have to install a power booster for the disc brakes for the earlier axles that I swap in. Will this be a broblem with proportioning valves and size of brake lines? I was told by a man that restores 67-72 trucks, that all I would have to do is shim the box and every thing will hook up Thanks feller's just picken brains here

Well, my truck came with power brakes so I can't help much as far as that swap goes. I have been running the stock brake set-up with the disc front-end for about 2 1/2 years and haven't had any problems (unless I have to stop in a hurry) with the rear wanting to lock-up before the fronts decide to grab and do their job. I bought a disc brake proportioning valve for my truck but haven't gotten around to installing it yet. I think I'm either to busy or to lazy to install it! The jury's still out on that one.
If you choose not to find an orginal style proportioning valve, I would guess that an aftermarket (like summit) would work just fine and would also be adjustable. Hope this helps........ Rob

Pont, I want to be cool just like you so I bought an 8' skyjacker softride lift off of the board, i remeber awhile ago you posted pictures of your cross-over steering set up. did you fab the set up yourself? What was the total cost of it? Thanks for any help.

Hey 1972Supercheyenne4wd, I installed disk brakes on my truck with no booster. Works great! Might have to push harder but it stops real fast. Much better than it did with drums. If you are looking for a booster, I have one for sale $100. Its from a '72 1/2 ton.

1972Super, any front diff (either Corp 10 bolt or Dana 44) from 71-87 should bolt in just fine. I did have to custom make 1 u-bolt to fit the outboard side of the carrier but it was a minor mod to make it fit and work great.
GMC71K20, glad to hear about your recent purchase on the 8" Skyjacker lift. I think you'll be as happy with it as I am. Just don't go cheap on the shocks, it will make all the difference. My crossover steering was fabbed by me (and some help from someone who can weld because I can't). I had the spare parts to build the crossover setup so it really didn't cost me much, other than a little labor in welding. I swapped to a disc Dana 44, P/S box and crossover steering all at the same time and my total investment was right at $200 for everything I just listed. $150 for the Dana, $40 for the 2wd steering box and about $10 for the welding I needed done. Hope this helps..... Rob

Glad you found all the info you needed. If you need anything else, just let me know.
I'm running Rancho RS9000 series 5-way adjustable shocks. Single shock at each corner. I think the newer version of the 9000 series is now something like the 9000sx and is a 9-way adjustable shock. Very happy with the ride quality!!! I'm also running a dual shock sterring stabilizer, Pro Comp ES5000 or something like that. Hope this helps..... Rob
