Yeah, I made the pattern at work yesterday, then traced it onto 1/4" plate last night. But I got so into the teardown of the rest of the frame that I never got them on last night! Either tonight or tomorrow night I will finish grinding the welds and install the fish plates. I think now that the frame is just bare rails, I might lay the frame on it's sides to weld in the plates. I think the welds will look better that way, rather than trying to weld upside-down and stuff

Hey Glock, nice looking job! The reason I like to keep the cuts straight is because I use part of the removed section to make diamond shaped plates to lay over the joints, including the 90 degree areas top and bottom.

Thanks!! I can't quite tell from the pics, but it looks like you are plating the verticle cuts as well. Is that what you meant by "including the 90 degree areas top and bottom"? Hadn't thought of that.

I have been buying them lately at Harbor Freight, I think they are about $6 or $7 for a 3-pack. I order them through MSC Industrial for work. Much better and last longer, but at $5 each (USD).

you mustve flipped that frame on its side! cheater! jk, i was looking at the close up of the fish plate and i was thinking damn thats a nice bead then it appeared in the pic above that its on its side?!?

Can you post some measurements? How much where? Why cut at the place you did? Etc.? I am going to do the same thing shortly. I am skilled enough, and have the equipment to do it. But i always look for a better idea. Thanks

If that is cheating, then I am guilty!!!

I tried to grind the welds on the inside while it was on the jackstands, but that proved to be a PITA! So I grabbed the engine hoist and lifted one side in the air and worked on the lower side, then let it down and did the other side. It did make for much nicer welds.

I will get some measurements from reference points for you tonight and post them here. Basically, you remove 12" from the middle, just ahead of the rear cab mount, and take 8" off the very end of the frame. I chose the exact location I did for one reason: the serial number is stamped on the top of the upper rail right where I removed the 12", and some other numbers are stamped ahead of them on the side. I placed the step in a way that would leave both sets of numbers. It's a no-no to deface the serial numbers, so I wanted to leave them alone.
