Re: Chummins Build

NICE!!!

As a fellow dad of three little ones I know the time constraints very well! LOL

How are you running the power brakes? Looks like a vacuum setup, but where is the vacuum coming from?

I'm soon heading in on a 6.2 Diesel conversion myself. Gotta love some diesel torque!

Great thread and keep us posted please.

Cummins has a vacuum pump that bolt inline with the power steering pump. What year is your 6.2? I have read nothing but bad reviews on pre-’88 6.2’s… Look forward to seeing your project.

Re: Chummins Build

It is a 6.2 military take out. More power than the civilian units, but no powerhouse by any means.

They are reliable, but probably get a bad name from some of the weak blocks that cracked when over heated. Block numbers are important to check on these motors!

This will be built for towing at a casual pace. If I get power greedy a turbo can be added later

I have had two 6.5TD trucks in the past and they treated me very well once the PMD electronics were sorted out.

That all said the Cummins is a lot more motor than a 6.2 ever will be!

Re: Chummins Build

Sweet build you have going, and awesome welding too! Keep at it. All that little stuff takes the longest, but it'll be well worth it in the end. If you get time, check out the new diesel conversion section in the engine area of the board.

LowRollin- Yours too. What turbo do you have? You said it was from a Cat right?
Its an S300 based turbo from a Cat C7: 62/64/13 and water cooled.

Hmm, duly noted!

Also I was thinking 4BT for a while, but the 6BT looks to fit much better than I expected in our trucks!!! Considering the 4BT is hard to find and probably the same if not more expensive than the 6BT, why not go big!... In the end, I was lazy and familiar with the 6.2/6.5 diesel already so figured I would stick with what I know. Pus the 6.2 is quieter than a Cummins. (I cringe at myself for saying that.. age is showing)

I have so much little stuff its not funny. Need more parts so I can start scratching some things off the list instead of moving on and adding to the list.
Ordered new slave cylinder today. No local store carried one anymore. Found one in Florida and they are shipping it up to me. Also got some new eyes comming.

Build it, Drive it, Enjoy it...

Basically it will serve the purpose of a third vehicle. I have my 99 Malibu I drive back and forth to work(70mi). My wife has her 07 Tahoe for the family and also works great for loading up with good friends and hauling a boat to the lake. And the 68 is there to be a truck with some power adders down the road.

If you noticed they all share the same

Re: Chummins Build

Didnt get much done to my project. Built swing bars for dads rollcage in Nova and had daddy duty all week.
Today at work I started on the duel intake plenum from a chunk of aluminum. I was going to leave it polished but after using 220 grit on a DA it has a brushed stainless look. Kinda hard to see from the pic tho

Nice work! I've got a top plate on the engine in my corvette similar to that. Works really well.

A little bit of an update... got back half of frame painted. Dopped of my yokes last night and should have new one ready to pickup tomorrow.
Started on the boost tubes tonight. I am using 3" exhaust tubing.
