How much should I pay????

I've been looking lately to get a 73-87 (preferably 78-83 or so) 1/2 or 3/4 ton 4wd here in SD. I'm looking for an OK truck, something that runs now but could use a new motor, etc. Not too worried about cosmetics. THe going price seems to be around $2500, and higher in most cases. Every now and then you'll get a $1500 or $2000 truck, but I haven't been quick enough to go look at them (they sell quick), so I don't know how good or bad they are. What do you guys think a good price is?? It wild for me to think, my 98 Stratus is probably only worth $5000 at best, and a lot of 80's trucks are hitting close to $4000. Opinions???? Thanks for the help.

as i am originlly from SD (RC area) i know 2WD are dime a dozen and 4WD go for a premium...
find a slightly older truck asy early 80s or 70s that has strong engine but rough body, that can be fixed later..
here in my new home in FL i found my 76GMC 2WD longbox with a tired but still strong 350 for $1500 cash... wish i still had my 79 chevy to sell ya...

Yeah, most of my looking is around RC. It amazes me somtimes what trucks go for. I'm not going to look too hard until late summer, hopefully I can catch an OK deal.

2wd trucks can be picked up much cheaper than 4wd. I sold my 83 longbed 2wd and bought a 85 4x4. Sold the 2wd for 1400, ran good no major mechanical issues. Paid 2200 for my 85 4x4 shortbed truck and the 700r4 only had 1st, 2nd and reverse. It looks pretty good though, has some dents and scratches and only one big dent in the cab above the door.

i couldnt believe my eyes when i saw my newly acquired 79 scottsdale sitting in the local grocery store parking lot with a "for sale" sign on it saying $500.00 in white window chalk on the windsheild, i must admit, it needs a ****load of work but its well worth the initial 500.00 investment!!!!! rock on, i love chevy

i know what you mean, i sold my 99 monte carlo monday for 4100, three days later i payed 4400 for a 72. cars suck, plain and simple im gonna stick with trucks

All I can say is you get what you pay for. When it comes to old trucks, you really need to buy one as nice as you can afford. If you buy an old tired worn out truck with hopes of fixing it up, you are going to end up with an old tired truck with lots of time and money invested.

If this is going to be your primary transportation, the frustration of haveing to work on it more than you drive it will get old fast. Look outside your area, and find something nice...
