Question about The new "thicker" Repro Fleetside Tailgates
Hey everyone, I just picked up a Repro Fleetside Tailgate for my truck and it is supposed to be thicker stampings compared to the previous ones. My question is are these things thinner than the OEM tailgates? Mine seems to be thinner but, it doesn't seem to be weak. The guy at the local "classic" shop told me that they don't carry the thin ones because they were junk, Which is what I have heard from everyone else.

I bought the tri-plus aftermarket tailgate and compared it to another repro gate and it was heavier. both were made in (taiwain?)

Do you know who it was made by? If it is one of the good ones it should weigh around 55-60 pounds. and thickness should be real close to OE

Well.... I'm guessing I probably got hosed on my deal with the local shop. The tailgate is made by "counterpart" whoever that is. Anyone know the specs on their gates?

Don't know exactly which gate you have, but Jeff at Bowtie Bits sold me one of the newer gates over a year ago. It is strong. He told me there are two gates out there, the newer one and the cheap one. He quit handling the cheap ones after seeing one bend when he saw one bend with two guys sitting on it. I don't think you're vendor is blowing smoke on this one.

Thanks Fred,
I have heard stories about the thin gates. What I meant by getting hosed was, I think they sold me the thin style for the price of the thicker one. They have two listed in their catalog but said they don't carry the thin one anymore. I can't really do anything about it now though, being that I already sanded it down, primed, and mounted it. If it ends up bowing out on me I guess I will just order one from the vendors here.
