sucking air sound?
im trying to work all the bugs out of my 67, its only been on the road a couple days and im still getting to learn all its little things, one question i have is when the engine is running i can hear air sucking, its pretty loud too, compared to any other small block ive heard anyways, we took the air cleaner off and covered the barrels to cut off all air flow and the motor almost stalled, i dont think there is any vaccumm leaks, so is this normal? my buddy who is an apprencise mechanic said it might be running lean or there could be a vacuum leak someone and to spray carb cleaner or something like it around the intake etc and see if it revs up at all, anyone have any ideas?
thanks, DEREK

Hey Derek, great to hear your on the road! This might sound funny but take an old piece of garden hose or tubing 6 feet long or whatever length, stick one end to your ear and run the other end around the base of your intake and listen (maybe you already tried this) it might help, later Doug

are you running an open element air cleaner ???
I've noticed more noise with those ..then with the stock air cleaner housing ....

i got a friends dad to look at it, he is a mechanic, he thinks i have the wrong gasket between the intake and carb, we listened with a stethescope and you can hear major sucking on the front of the carb right below the vacuum line, next week he is goign to help me take the carb off and put the right gasket on, its running fine though soi ll be okay until then, he is surprised that its running as smooth as it is, anyways will i notice hp gain and better gas mileage once this is fixed?
derek
