Best Deal on Crossover Steering
Bills are paid and I only got rained out of one day of work, so this a after next paycheck I am doing my crossover steering conversion on my 10 bolt. I am going to use a junk yard tie rod linkage for the drag linkage and junk yard pitman arm, I already have the 2wd steering box. I need either one passenger side Knuckle milled and tapped, a spacer, bolts cones and washers, and a steering arm or I have found 2 knuckles and 2 arms on ebay for about $250 already assemblied acouple weeks ago, but nothing now. I figure if the price is right, why not do high steer while I'm at it. So the real question is who has the best price and where did you get your stuff. I am looking to spend about $150 for the crossover or $250 for high steer. If I can find a milled knuckle cheap enough, I found blank steering arms and spacers for 25.00 arms and 15.00 spacers. They come with diagrams for the drilling, but then they wouldn't be tappered for the tre's. But I can find a cheap enough knuckle, I can put out the extra money for heim joints. I don't mind doing extra work to save money and have a better set up. Many people on this board and others talk about how they did there conversion for $200, $250 or so but how? Maybe the already had flat top passenger knuckles, but they still have to pay to get them machined and tapped. I mean I already have the box and I think I am gonna end up digging real deep in my pocket for this project. So for rambling, but how do I save my hard earned money!!

Sky Manufacturing all the way. my buddy Tim has one of their setups on his truck. TOP NOTCH STUFF! IIRC they're pretty reasonable on price too.

YOu can do crossover cheap, but I don't think that cheap. I have a Dana 60 which is the easiest to do a x-over on, and it cost me more than $200. The arm alone was $200. You can use a Gm three piece tie rod for a draglink. The ends are pretty cheap. But since you have a ten bolt, which never came with flattops, you need a Dana 44 flattop, which is relativly easy to find. But then you need to get it milled and tapped, and I would think that there would take the $200. Then you will need the arm, and so on. In other words, I seriously doubt that you could do it for that price.

I used one off a 79 Ford 1/2 ton 4x4, but any 4x4 77.5-79 Bronco and 1/2 ton will work. I think the end needs to be reamed a little, been awhile so I may be wrong. The correct arm is only like $50, SUP-1104 is the number. Its for the trucks I listed above.

If you get the nuckle you can send it to ORD and they will drill, tap, and put the studs in for $70 plus ship. They might even give you the cones, not sure though.

Well I decided to break down and just buy a kit. I went with BlackBirds and very pleased with them so far. I did a lot of research and find them to be the most complete and best price. They even threw in a D44 drivers knuckle for my ten bolt to solve the tie rod mount problem (on top for a 44 and on bottom for a 10 bolt) because I couldn't add the $35 they wanted for it in on the pay pal site. Just can't wait for it to get here. Now JCWhitney ticked me off, I order a frame repair kit from them and had a 15% off offer when I bought $80 or more of stuff. The kit was 69.95 for I order a 10" drop ball mount and a steering stabalizer. The ball mount was supposed to be the only thing on back order. I recieved a package today with only the steering stab in it and an invoice saying the frame kit was on backorder too, the only real thing I needed. Needless to say I called them and complained, canceled the frame kit and ordered it from ORD. They said to call back on monday morning, when I will talk to the real customer service and have them take the 15% off anyway, seing my order then came to less than $80 again, and will also have them drop the shipping and handling. I have had a problem with them before on rushing parts just to find what I need not there and then did whatever I wanted to make me happy. Oh well, just as long as ord doesn't screw me everything will be in order again. One more thing, I made my own steering box brace, it cost me $5, yes five dollars in material to make. The going price for a premanufactored one, $110 or more. I had the 10 gauge plate laying around from another project and the the 3/8 pipe (sleeves for the bolts) was black steel plumbing pipe I got from the hole in the wall hardware store for $1.29 for an 6" piece. Need a way to justify a welder, how about saving yourself $105+!!
