OT-Rat Rod...

I have had a 90 S10 donated to my "madness", & am really thinking about pulling the 383 from my longhorn , mating to a 400T/2500 stall that I already have, to go have big fun! I have built a couple "pocket trucks", they run like stink & are very squirrely on the street. On this one i am looking more at strip manners. the 383 runs 385-390 ponies....what will it take to hook that on the strip in an S truck? crazyL

V8 S-10s are more fun than a two peckered billy goat.

I personally don't think you're ever going to have too much luck with traction on the stock leaf spring rear suspension. And, if you do ever manage to hook it up, you will break the rear end. Not might, will break.

Back in 2001 I had a '91 S-10 short bed reg. cab with a '96 Corvette LT1 and 6 speed tranny!!! The original 2.8 engine and 5 speed were going out and I convinced the wife it would be cheaper for me to put the V-8 in instaed of replacin the other engein. All told I spent right under 4000.00 for the engine and tranny putting it in myself. I really miss that truck!! I only sold it because we were having our first child and we thought we needed two 4 door cars, boy were we wrong. I hope to someday build another.
I had zero traction off the line, even in 2nd gear. I even put lakewoods on the back, but they didn't help much i had 3" single exhaust exiting behind the rear tire on the passenger side. It looked stock except for the bigger exhaust and traction bars. i used a spintec muffler and at idle you could barely hear it, but when I romped on the gas, watch out!! I would eat F*rd Lightnings all day long on the freeway and could hang with the (then) new vettes on the freeway. I even raced a rat 454 72 longbed that was a monster with Mickeys in the back at a certain 1/4 hideaway. from a 5 mph roll I destroyed him. From a dead stand still he took off on me and was about 2 car lengths ahead of me bu the time I finally got some traction. By the end of the 1/4 mile I had my front bumper even with his back bumper.
Oh the days! I have to stop now before I start crying.

thanks for the input guys I am not sure i want the expense of back halfing the truck(sure sounds like thats what it will take + a 9" rear), to make it really stick. Maybe i will set something a little milder in .....the boys & I can play for a while.....then maybe sell the "pocket truck" to fund some other projects many thanks for the reality check.....crazyL

You can make the leaf springs hook. Just put some Cal-track bars on it, and some good adjustable shocks. Is the S-10 a 4 cylinder? if so just leave the stock springs in it and get some adjustable Drag shocks for the front. Try to mount all the heavy stuff you can in the bed. Ideally you want to get between 45 - 50% front to rear weight ratio. Your probably gonna need a good slick for that as well.

Hooking a stock suspension car isn't impossible, it just takes a little work. I have a Drag Radial Mustang (Don't bash too hard, it has a 426 SBC in it) with stock style suspension and I can pull 1.35 60fts with it. On a 26X10 slick I have turned a 1.29 60ft. My good friend has a 67 Camaro with stock style suspension (with cal tracks) and he can pull 1.38 60ft at the track on Drag Radials.
