Might want to check out this thread or this thread or this thread. Basically, they recommend checking steering components before messing with the box adjustment.

I adjusted my power steering box a couple of months ago after having the vehicle for a few months. The adjustment is an allen head screw with a locknut on it. I tightened it up until I found a little resistance, then I stopped. It helped out alot. I am not sure it this is the correct procedure or not. I hope someone will say something if it is not...

Well my 2 cents is from what I have read is that you can only adjust the manual ones. The PS ones you cant. Im shure most of you will disagree.

Like what has already been stated, it's not something to mess with. Do yourself a favor and just replace it ... but check ALL other steering components first. Chances are it isn't your steering box, it's something else.
Saginaw steering boxes are recipricating ball systems. That means that it is a series of balls that "flow" around a worm gear type shaft. If you have "slop" somewhere around dead center, and you then adjust that slop out, chances are that the steering will be too tight in the areas on the worm gear that has less wear than in the dead center - think full turn left and right. Kinda like trying to make a 1.000" inch ball fit thru a .500" pipe ... it don't work. I hope that made sense. |
