Pulling Tranny/drive shaft...have questions,,,need answers please. - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

Ok, The engine is out and there sits the 3 speed tranny on the cross member, and of course connected to the driveshaft at the u-joints. What is the correct steps removing the tranny and drive shaft. If someone can explain how I should go about this it would make it much easier for me. Thanks in advance.

Unbolt the driveshaft from the yoke on the rear end (should be 2 u-bolts). If it's a 2 piece drive shaft unbolt the carrier bearing from the crossmember. Then pull the driveshaft out of the back of the tranny (should slip out). If it hasn't been done in a while it may take a some effort to do it.

Be sure to support the trans with a jack.The thing is heavy when your lying on your back.

Make sure you take steps for preventing your truck from rolling once you disconnect the driveshaft - that kills someone everyonce in a while - forgetting your truck can start rolling if you are a bit of an incline or unlevel ground.

If all that's holding the tranny up is the crossmember and the driveshaft, put a jack under the tranny before you disconnect the driveshaft.

Now if you're young and in decent shape, you don't need a jack for the 3 speed. Just use the bench press method of installation. I used to put them in and out by myself. You will need two bolts set up as alignment pins. Otherwise it's tough holding the tranny up with one hand and turning the tailshaft with the other while trying to stab it in.

I am in good shape but I am going to use a jack anyway. I got caught up in cleaning/degreasing the engine compartment this week end so I never got to the driveshaft and tranny. I do appreciate the tips and help though...I will remove the ds and tranny this week. Thanks Guys!

Sounds like you're smarter than I was when I was younger. But we couldn't afford the floor jacks they were selling in the 60's & 70's, you could buy a new engine cheaper.
