82 C-10 Axle Codes
Does any one know the axle codes for a 82 C10 . I am having trouble
finding out the gear ratio. Had stock a 305 with a 700r4. My friend has an 83 with the same setup and his truck has 3.73 ratio. I am trying to find out so i can either leav'em or change them. I am about finished planting a 496 BBC, with a M-22 4 speed. I don't want have that setup and have 3.08 gears. Thanks alot Almost forgot i have the build sheet with the numbers it has 3 digit code and says standard axle Are we having fun yet OF COURSE |

The 'standard axle' is defined in the light truck data book by engine, transmission and GVW. Different combinations of those will lead to different 'standard axle' ratios. If you give me that information for your truck I can look it up for 1977, 1979, 1980, and 1984. (I don't have a 1982 data book)
The best way to determine your axle ratio is to take off your rear diff cover and look at the numbers on the ring gear. There will be something like 41 10 (4.10) or 28 11 (2.56 blah!) or 45 12 (3.73) etc. It does take longer and requires you to refill the rear diff with oil and a new gasket, but it's the only way you can be positive of your gear ratio. Remember, the newest of these trucks is 17 years old, so axle swaps are not uncommon and the options sticker can't always be trusted due to changes previous owners could have made.

Hey i take offense by the blah to 2.56!! LOL, j/k. i just found out Red has 2.56 the other day when i was scoping the dealer option sticker in the glovebox. I really don't care about gear ratio; red aint a hotrod.

Unless you have a non standard axle ratio, it won't be listed on the glovebox option sheet.
But, there is a way to see what it came stock with. It doesn't mean that someone hasn't changed the gears though, as stated above. If you will look on the front of the axle tube on passenger side about 4 to 6 inches out from the pumpkin, GM die punched a code. The letters/numbers are real small, around 1/8" in size. They are hard to find and you will have to clean the tube real good first. Get this code and post it and I will tell you what it came with.

If a truck (83' 305 700r4) came with the trailer pkg. Does that increase the chances for a 3.73 ratio??? Back then was the gear ratio a part of trailer pkg???
