Help Identifying
Now that I finally got pictures I can try to get some help with this. A few people have told me that it may be my tranny cooler, but it is in no way hooked up to my transmission. Thought maybe an oil cooler cause it almost looks it. I can definitely tell it ain't stock cause someone cut up the frame to fit the lines into rails, and its kinda a messy job that was done. It was mounted inside the radiator support just in front of the radiator. The hoses are goin to the back, sittin inside the frame rails. The one on the passenger side leads to a pipe that is just hanging at the fuel tank, and is connected to nothing. The drivers side is connected to some kind of outlet/inlet looking valve on the rear, which as shown, is connected to nothing also.
If someone might be able to help identify it, would be very helpful. If I can get a hold of a camera I will take better pics as the engine is out now and bed is off. Thanks P.S. - If needed, 1980 C30 w/ 350, sm465, 14 bolt 10-1/2" Pics: (hopefully showing up and in order) 1:Front showing it and the lines 2:Outside frame rail drivers side 3:Inner rail drivers side 4:Passengers side (leaking whatever fluid it had in it) |

Looks like a hydraulic setup of some kind. At least by the foamy fuid coming out of the one line, after mixed with some water. Not a tranny cooler if it came with a sm465. Pic (2) is just a filter mount. Not sure why it needed a cooler, unless it served as a cooler/tank. Homemade bed on it now? Maybe it had a dump bed, aerial boom, tow boom or hoist on it. Hard to say. Did you try to research who the previous owners were?

I bought it from one of those 'buy here, pay here' lots and they usually buy these from auctions. I had it towed once, and when the tow truck driver pointed out the fluid leaking from that pipe he sniffed it and did say it smelled like hydraulic fluid. I always thought it used to be a tow truck or something around that, cause the shifter had a cap on it with a 3 or 4-way toggle switch on it with lines dangling from it. I do remember it had said Eaton on it. Lot owner said previous owner prob just put em there for nothin.
The bed was welded to the frame and the hitch, which was also welded to the frame. And bolted in the middle. It is an 8 ft bed, but somehow this has never looked like a lwb to me. As for previous owners, all I have are the mudflaps and some inscribing(sp) around the drivers door striker, looks like math/prices. |
