How many grunts to remove cab & box?
Hey fellas! I'm ready to pull the cab and box off my 74 to get started on the frame work / break in my other engine etc but I need to know how many guys I need to remove a cab with everything on / in it less the doors, bench seat and steering column, and how many guys I'll need to lift off the box? I would just use the skidsteer, but I don't want to wreck anything in the process, so it'd be best to lift it all by hand...
I've got a set of sawhorses to put the box onto, but can I just set the cab down on the floor on some boards to keep it off the ground?

Russ, I would have 3 people plus yourself to do these task. Its not as if the weight is the problem, it is the ackwardness and stepping over the frame and stuff like that that makes it difficult. One remider, the front of the cab is much heavier than the rear, so be careful there. Also, if you have access to a cherry picker, using it to help lift these items works pretty good too.
Here is a pic of the dolly I made for my cab. My bed is on pallets.

i've done the bed swap with 2 guys on several occasions, one of them was with my 63 year old grandfather. that one was a longbed, and was quite the chore. when my buddy and i put the bed on my 86, we used 4x4s leaned up on the back of the frame, then walked the bed up the 4x4s and slid it into place. really not that bad, but if you're unsure of the strength of your grunts, you may want to get a couple extras. extra hands = more control.
as for the cab swap, i have done it by myself on 3 occasions. once with my 82 C10, once from my 86 C10 frame to the first K10 frame, and then from the first K10 frame to the second. the easiest way there is to use jackstands and 4x4s under the rockers (if they're solid). adjust the jackstands so that the frame will clear the lower most point on the cab, roll the frame out. installation is reverse of removal. all in all, not a huge deal, just takes some thought, some care, and a whole lot of hillbilly inginuity. |

I pulled my bed off with just me and my buddy. No problem...of course, it doesn't have the tailgate on it. That gate weighs 75lbs ALONE.

The bed on my 80 is rather light, she has lot a lot of weight due to cancer
74's bed will be fairly heavy though, lol I can get the cab off myself, just worried about the box...
