SM465 Tranny?

Where can I get a rebuild kit (complete) for the SM465 tranny? Also anyone that has had there's rebuilt, how much did it cost for the whole procedure? Also how hard is it to pull the tranny and Transfer case out of a 78 K20? It has the NP205 transfer case also. Can you do it with just a floor jack or do you need some more specialized tools for the job? Thanks Mike

To make your life a whole lot easier do one or the other, go rent a tranny jack or split the t-case from the tranny. I'm guessing the whole mess could go 250-300 lbs. Also take the shifter out of the transmission this will help it clear the floorboard. Good Luck!

Never rebuilt 1 myself, but from what I undersrand, it is not very difficult. It is heavy, I think almost 400 pounds for combo, floor jack and stong friend will do. I suggest using good ratchet straps to hold up while moving crossmember and lowering, it may be slow, but is a lot safer than letting it fall on you. Lowering it onto a creeper works pretty well.

Novak
or
Drivetrain.com. Click on "Transmission, manual, rebuild kits." Page down to find your make, model, year truck and click on corresponding trans (prolly "various"). Find SM465 from there.

Several other sources exist, but I like Novak's website layout. You can click on the blue link for each corresponding number in the illlustrated parts breakdown and it will tell you something about that particular part.

Hey thanks guys for the input. Also does anyone know how hard it is to pull the shifter out of the tranny? Anyone know how much one might cost to get rebuilt? Thanks in advance...Mike

Shifter

There's a steel coller on the top of the trany, around the shifter, that you push down on and rotate about a 1/4 turn not sure witch way, then the shifter should lift out.

It's easy to pull the shifter out: push down turn left and whole shifter pops up. Let me know if you need step by step pics. Have them at home.

Thanks guys for all your help I really appreciate it. So am I apost to push the shifter down and turn a 1/4 turn; Or am I apost to push the collar down and turn a 1/4 turn? So for all the dang questions I just like being one step ahead when I do things.

the little, for a lack of better words, "tin cup" w/ the slot and turn to the left and when you release it, it should come up out of the tranny and the shifter will come straight out.

I've seen rebuilt w/exchange trans for $500 on e-bay-but shipping on 200lbs would be a pain

I just took the cover off mine and it looked like brand new inside so I don't think I'm going to worry about the rebuild-I guess it's just not supposed to shift like a sports car...

Well everything is good with this tranny I guess. The only reason im asking is because it has a little bit of a leak at the bottom of the bellhousing. I think it might be the front seal on the tranny. But that is the reason im asking. Has anyone else had any problems with the front seal on these trannys leaking or am I the only one? Oh yeah I also wanted to say Jim that I think your truck is bada#$ I love the look of an ole chevy 4X4 thats a lil beat up. Get a lil mud on them and they look fantastic Thanks...Mike

One of my trucks leaked in the same place. I pulled it and resealed the whole tranny. I went to my local chevy parts dealer & ordered all the gaskets for it. NAPA supplied the front&rear seal. The front seal is in the bearing retainer on the input shaft. It looks like a miniture wheel seal. Good Luck

I just pulled the SM465 out of my '71 K10. After I pushed the shift lever collar down and rotated it 1/4 turn counterclockwise, the shifter would not just lift right out. I had to drive two hollow pins out of the way of the shifter's circular swivel bracket. I found the pins on each side of the shifter in the cast cover's shift tower. I used a hammer & punch to gently punch them out of the way without punching them all the way out. Install them with the split facing down for ease in gaining purchase with a punch next time. I don't know if the pins are in just some SM465s. Maybe differences existed between years or 2wd & 4wd.

I have SM465s in all 3 of my trucks and the 71 and 72 are the only two I removed the shifters from and they both lifted right out. Maybe someone tried to remove the shifter by driving the pins in and messed up the clearance.
Thanks, I hope to have the chevy painted black this spring w/ a 70 grill vice the 72 in their now.

email tim_84_chevy@yahoo.com he may be able to help you, if not with the parts, may be able to point you in the right direction.

he's the owner of Tim's Offroad, which specializes in Chevy 4x4 stuff, but can get you just about anything you want. prices are very competitive, most of the time he can beat the competition, and customer service (from what i hear, he's a personal friend of mine, so my doing business with him wouldnt be an accurate desription) is top notch. tell him Jeremy sent you.

Another way to get the trans out is stick an engine hoist in through the door and lower it down.
