Can anyone tell me...

On the new style gaskets that have an O-ring built into them do you need to use silicon or what is recommended? The gasket I am refering to is the thermostat housing.

Also I feel a little foolish asking this one but, on the exhaust manifolds I seem to remember always having the "flat side" of the gasket towards the head. However, I was told by a parts guy at a local parts store that it was the other way around with the flat side away from the head. It doesn't seem right for some reason. It has been a while and if the parts guy wasn't so sure about it, I am sure it wouldn't have come up. Can someone set me straight.

rubber O ring is all you need, no additional sealing meathods are needed.
I always installed manifold gaskets metal side out to the manifold.

unless the housing is warped. wich does happen. if it is put a D.A. disk on a piece of glass and sand away.

I do not like the O ring gaskets for anything involving coolant. the hot-cold thermal cycles will cause it to leak sooner than a good paper type gasket. even better yet Felpro has a therm gasket made of some kind of rubber over a plastic core. I dont know the # but they are around $8 IIRC.
as for the exhaust, DO NOT USE the run of the mill gaskets. go to the dealer & ask for exh gaskets for a '97 Chevy P30 step van with the 5.7 VIN R. it is a multiple layer stainless steel unit that will NEVER leak. these are not too spendy, but more than the leaky ones.

I run the ole regular metallic gaskets with the little ears on my headers and havent had a leak since the early 90's. I put the silver side out. about 7 bucks.
