New or Used Sheetmetal? Opinions?
If a guy was building a show quality truck to drive on sunny days, would you replace sheet metal (panels that have average rust) with New Reproductions? Or Originals with minor imperfections with a little rust fixed and re-used? Darren

In a perfect world a guy would use NOS original parts but.....
I personally would find some nice used parts and not take my chances with the repro as the quality is sometimes iffy. ------------------ 1969 Chevrolet Custom Camper 20 350/400 70k original miles They have the Internet on Computers now? --Homer Simpson Gee_Emm's Page Help me get my truck on a soda bottle!!!!! |

nice !!
they way i see it I would opt for NOS first and then rust free original and then aftermarket, it all depends on $ available to you to spend and amount of fitment work you want to perform but then here i am living in the middle of the major rust rot out belt, so... ------------------ Randy- Lincoln, IL r68c30@hotmail.com 71 C-10, trying to assemble....sigh.. parting out 5.0LTPI '81 cutlass supreme brougham *Paint is overrated © RSS Enterprises 2000 [This message has been edited by Fast68Chevy (edited April 07, 2002).] |

I look at it like this, there is no such thing as 'rustfree' 30 + year old cab corners, rockers, ect. Even if it is just a little, it has started to corrode.
I would go for the patch panels if NOS is not around or out of the budget. ------------------ '69 G.M.C. 350/350. I think you are mistaken there longhornmail, there is such a thing as rust free, but you have to have luck and know where to look. :P

I still have the original rockers on my longhorn......but will replace them, just because I dont know what is behind them. Cab corners are great, but this truck has been garaged for 18yrs!.........69 longhorn.

Is there such a thing as New Old Stock fenders? Hoods? Etc.? Or how about a totally rust free right fender? Where do you get them? I'm talkin' a spare no expense truck here. I'm not quite ready to buy yet. Just doin' the research. Darren

RUSTFREE SHEETMETAL DOESN'T EXIST??? MAYBE NOT IN OHIO OR IDIANNA OR MICHIGAN, BUT WE DO HAVE SOME OUT HERE IN NEVADA. MY 71 SHORT FLEET WAS TOTALLY (& I MEAN TOTALLY) RUSTFREE WHEN I STARTED ON IT. I'VE NEVER SEEN THE SPACE SHUTTLE, OR KNOW HOW A COMPUTER, OR EVEN A TELEPHONE WORKS, BUT I DON'T DOUBT THERE EXISTANCE. I'VE SEEN 45-55 YEAR OLD RUSTFREE TRUCKS OUT HERE. ONE OF MY OLD GIRLFRIENDS USE TO ALWAYS SAY "I'VE NEVER SEEN THAT" & I WOULD REPLY "OH DON'T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF,IT'S A BIG WORLD OUT THERE,& YOU COULDN'T POSSIBLY SEE EVERYTHING". ANY MEMBER OUT THERE THAT IS LOOKING FOR A PROJECT,OR CAB, JUST FLY OUT HERE, & I'LL PICK YOU UP AT THE RENO AIRPORT, CART YOU AROUND (ALL YOU HAVE TO PAY FOR IS GAS) HELP YOU FIND A GENUINE RUSTFREE PROJECT, HELP YOU LOAD IT ON A RENTAL TRUCK, & SEE YOU OFF FOR THE TRIP HOME. I'M RETIRED, SO TIME ISN'T A PROBLEM FOR ME, & THIS OFFER IS OPEN TO ANY BOARD MEMBER, THAT IS LOOKING FOR A PROJECT FOR THERESELVES, & NOT JUST LOOKING TO SELL & MAKE A PROFIT. ONCE YOU RESTORE A RUSTFREE TRUCK, YOU'LL NEVER WANT TO FIGHT THAT BROWN STUFF AGAIN. NOW I'M NOT SAYING THEY ARE ON EVERY STREETCORNER OUT HERE, & YOU HAVE TO HUNT FOR'EM, BUT THEY'RE HERE. ALOT OF DEALERS IN USED SHEETMETAL FOR THESE TRUCKS WOULD LIKE YOU TO BELIEVE DIFFERENT, & PAY $1000 + FOR A CAB OR BED, BUT THEY ARE HERE & NOT IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND. JOHN

junkyardjohn, I'm taking you up on that...I have free tickets to Reno...I'll even buy the beer and food. I wouldn't make that offer to Desert Rat...that dude is big, thirsty and has too much free time on his hands right now...he'd eat and drink me out of a show truck....ROFLMAO! I'm thinking the Reno, Sparks, Fernely, Fallon, Carson City loop...what do you think? Do it in a weekend? I have acquaintances in Fallon. How do we get the stuff home? On second thought maybe I can talk CARS4567 and my son into a long road trip this spring!

COME ON OUT, BUT I'D PLAN ON A LITTLE LONGER THAN A WEEKEND. I THINK YOUR BEST BET IS TO FLY OUT & DRIVE A U-HAUL (OR SOME RENTAL TRUCK) HOME. I'M NOT A BIG GUY, BUT IT SURE GETS HOT & DRY HERE IN THE SUMMER, & I'VE BEEN KNOWN TO DRINK A BEER OR TWO ON OCCASION (JUST TO STAVE OFF DEHIDRATION) LOL JOHN

Let's make it a field trip! A group outing..I STILL need rear quarters off of a burb. Hmmm, and I have free tickets too. I'd have an interest big time. We could stay at Harrah's ? Maybe win enough to buy a couple of trucks.

Yah those southern states have some nice trucks, AZ, NM, but no so much in Texas.
I got my truck locally up here in Canada where it is snow covered 7 months of the year. The ONLY rust on mine is the kick panels, and thats only beacuse of DAMN leaves. But I think I got lucky with mine. ------------------ 1969 Chevrolet Custom Camper 20 350/400 70k original miles, 99% rust free They have the Internet on Computers now? --Homer Simpson Gee_Emm's Page Vote for my truck to be on the label of a bottle of Jones Soda!!! |

COME ON OUT FOR A LITTLE VACATION. YOU CAN USUALLY GET ROOMS AT THE CASINOS CHEAP (ABOUT $30-$35 FOR A DBL.)CHEAP MEALS, & I'll TAKE YOU ON A TOUR OF ALL THE JUNKYARDS WITHIN A 100 MILES, MAKE A PARTY OUT OF IT. TOUR ALL THE WHOREHOUSES(PROSTITUTION IS LEGAL HERE),THERES NO SUCH THING AS LAST CALL IN THE DRINKING ESTABLISHMENTS & THROW SOME MONEY AWAY IN THE CASINOS. I LIVED IN MICHIGAN FOR 35 YEARS,SO I KNOW WHAT THOSE RUSTBELT TRUCKS ARE LIKE. I ACUALLY HAD A F#^%D WORK VAN THAT THE STARTER RUSTED OUT ON. LOL

As far as rental trucks, Penskee is the cheapest national one way ride out there for moving vans. And I'll atest to not even being able to feel a truck strapped to the back bumper. (I used a tow bar)

Theres alot of rust free stuff here,if its originally from here, but the yards have rusty ones too-i assume from the snowbirds maybe that brought it here from Michigan or something. But once it starts to rust,it never stop unless you cut it out-guess why they call it cancer
