700r4 continues! GOT QUESTIOS AGAIN????
Ok guys, I went to talk with a tranny guy today, now tell me which way would you go, and think about how much these trannys cost to rebuild every time they blow up! I can either go with a TH350 with the 1st and 2nd gear changed out to lower gears, with a 3:23 rear gear it would pull out the gate like it had a set of 4:45 gears in the back, then in 3rd I would have a 3:23 gear 1 to 1, or go with a 700r4 with 4;11 or 4:56, now I am stuped on which one to go with, the 700 is so tempermental, and the cost is a lot more when they burn up, that is the down side to the 700 now the th350, I dont know what the difference it would be in gas mileage going with a 3:23 rear gear with lower 1st and 2nd gear changed out in the th350, I can get a 700r4 for $ 500, with stock converter, or have my th350 rebuilt builit proof for $ 750 and thats with a 2200 stahl converter, tell me what you guy think?
I know I know I keep asking about these 700r4s but man I just am very very undecided with this, I like the ideasl of a th350 with the lower gears installed and running a 3:23 rear gear. sam

Spend the money on a great 700r4 from Art Carr or B&M or go with a 350 or 400 and the money you save now will get spent on gas in about 2 yrs. Your only going to pick up about 3 to 5 mpg. On a tank that might get you 100 miles more and the cost is about $7 or $8. The 700r4 is going to run you around $700 to $800 more than a good 350 or 400. So your looking at 100 trips to the pump before it all works out even.

only 2 things you have to know about 700r4...
1. spend the money and get the absoult best one you can, pay to have it set up right do everything thing perfect. 2. stay away from the piles of crap unless you can afford to do #1

another alternative would be to have .70 ratio final drive gear installed in a 3 or 4 speed tranny, GMC Paul had this done in a 3 speed, hehe

I'd go with the Th350 myself.

now i didnt do the math to check but my guess is with 3:23 gears and a 1:1 ratio the rpms will be pretty dang close to a .70 ratio with a 4:11 or 4:56 ratio

It really all depends on what the primary use of your truck will be. Do you plan on just driving this thing every once in awhile? Do you plan of using it for racing? Do you plan on takeing road trips in it? All things that would play a factor for me. If I where building a truck to drive on weekends, and just cruse town in, and didn't have a bunch of money I'd get a 400, but if I where going to race and cruse town on the week ends and didn't have alot of money I'd go with a 350T beefed up a bit. But if I where going to take road trips use it as a everyday driver, and race it I'd definately use a beefed 700R4.
So really you need to tell us what the primary use will be to give a real educated answer. Just my thoughts. I love my 700R4 wouldn't trade it for nothing(but a JET 4L80E! LOL) They are not piles of crap either, if they where so so bad GM would have recalled them.. period! They've been put in many years of trucks and Camaros and Vetts, so how bad could they be? here is my long horn, think it runs about 3200k at 75. works great for me,i know that trany is bullet proof. no mods, im happy.
now i have tall tires and i think 373 rear end, seems a bit lower than that but i dont think the c20 long horn came with any lower gear number.

The only problem I have had with my 700 is blowing up the output shaft, but that was because it was a defective unit from advance adapters, and they sent me a new one. Just haven't had any problems with mine even though I do whomp on the thing quite a bit.

I will be driveing the truck almost every day, I drive it to work everyday now, I work shift work, 4 on and 4 off, I dont have time this week to get over and talk to the guy that built the 700r4, I am going to get with him next week, I wish I wouldn't of had so much bad luck with the 700 in the past, this is what has me very very lerry about this tranny, that is why I lean harder on the th350 with the lower 1st and 2nd gear, running a higher rearend gear, I think the rpms in the end would be close to the same, and with the lower gears, in the th350 comming out the gate would be the sake as 700 with 4:11s, and I know that the th350 will hold up to almost any thing. so any way, I am going to go talk with the guy next week, see just how well built the 700 really is, before I make this choice, I know I need to make it soon, the truck is down!

IMO I would go with the 700R4. I've used both in my truck and I have no complaints with the 700R4.
