Might need a new steering box...what are my options???

My steering has lots of slack and I've determined its my steering box itself. We tried adjusting it and that didn't anything. If I decided to get a new one, I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations? What about a different ratio (something a bit faster)? Thanks!

Check these out, http://www.agrperformance.com/produc...0GMC&model=101 they are the best out there IMHO, and dont cost any more than going w/ a stock replacement.

If you don't want to spend that much I seen where a guy sells rebuilts for around $125. I can't remeber the site but if your interested I will look for it. I wouldn't recomend the junk yard route, I am going through that now and have made 4 two hour trips and don't have a working one yet.

Can you tell me how you adjusted your steering box? Just out of curiosity. I adjusted mine and it made it feel like a brand new truck, but it is a careful process that needs to be done correctly.

have ya checked the frame around the box for cracks ????? i thought my steering box was bad too but it was the frame cracked and let the box move sum i got a frame repair kits and fixed it now i need to get the box/frame stiffner to keep it from happin again

if you are running big tires or 4 wheel alot you need the box/frame stiffner even if the frame is not cracked

I don't have experience with specialty steering box providers, but I do have some reputable sites you might be interested in:
WestTexasOffRoad: Read the tech area. Matt Hodges has some info you can do yourself.
Howe Perf: They offer steering boxes and pumps for 4x4s. Been around a long time.
MotherTruckers: I recently saw MotherTruckers post that they now sell AGR steering boxes and pumps.

Are you speaking of an experience with one of your 73-up GM trucks? GM used a much-to-weak frame on 73-8? pickups, blazers, & burbs that made the steering box frame area much-too-prone to cracking under not-so-great stress. AFAIK, 67-72 GM truck frames have no such concerns though your point on big tires or hard 4 wheeling adding considerable stress to steering box frame mounts beyond factory design parameters is certainly valid.

Thanks for the the info guys. Those boxes from AGR look real nice but might be out of my current budget. What I think I might try to do first is just take the stock box out and see if I can find someone to look at it and see if they can find what is wrong with it (who know might only cost $50 to fix). Any tips on getting these things out of the pickup? Do you need any special tools (like to disconnect that link)? Thanks again!

you'll need either a pitman arm puller, or a big hammer (not recommended)
