Lift kits for 2wds?
i know i know, you all think its pointless to lift a 2wd truck, but i was wondering if there are any kits out there for a 72 chevy 2wd truck?

Pretty sure you can use block on the rear as long as its a leaf spring. Then I know you can put 1 ton or 3/4 ton coils in the front that'll give you about 2 inches then go either body lift or spacers in the front for the extra amount ou want. I'm also pretty sure you can put 4x4 lift springs in the rear, again as long as your rear is leaf spring. correct me if I'm worng though. also you can put just a body lift on it. plenty of those out there. Going to be kind of hard to find a 5 or 6 inch lift though. common is 2 and 3 you can find them though I know they are out there. I've thought about doing the same to my truck. If you do it let me know how it turns out.

Just put a huge rear tub, and take the front inner fenders out. Throw a set of 35 15.5 20s on it the right offset wheels, maybe narrow the rear end, bag it, and walla a bagged 72 tuckin 35s!

smokin, Nope, no kits... except for coils, and spacers... they do make tubular control arms, but with coil lift you lose any down travel. Unless the control arms are angled for the ball joints they will wear out quick, not to mention your tie rods doing the same thing. The BEST lift would be a spindle lift, but as of currently i havent found anyone offering a spindle lift for anything pre 88.

just curious and not flaming but why do you want to lift your 2wd? is it for the look or is there some kinda practicality? either way is cool its your truck but i am just curious. oh yeah and a guy from my town did a double frame on his 2wd. not sure how many inches it gave him, but thats lots of work and seems pretty extreme to me

smokin, a 4x4 kit has front leaf springs which you dont have... and newer 4x4 trucks are torsion bars..
Driver, mine if for practicality sorta.. truck is paid off, too beat up to be a show truck and a longbed (looks silly lowered IMHO)... also, i live in the country with alot of gravel and dirt/mud roads.. i prefer to have a capable truck. My truck is pretty well equiped though with all tools, spare tire, spare gas, recovery gear, just need hi-lift jack, winch and rear locker. Last edited by Prerunner1982; 03-03-2005 at 12:48 PM. |

You could do coils or spacers but like stated before you are going to run into a problem with the angle on the balljoint with alot of lift.It will take around 6 or 7" to clear a 37" tire.

correct me If I'm wrong but you can put a standard body lift on it, about 3" then put 1 or 3/4 ton front coils for a 2" then if you want more you can put coil spacers. about a 1" or 2". thats about what 6" or 7" in the front then put either springs in the back or a block. Blocks are cheaper by a lot. that would give you 6 or 7 inches of lift. thats plenty of lift for those big 'ol tires. as stated in above kind of point less. unless you want the look and the extra sidewall cushsion(sp) that a bigger tire gives you. or looking for clearence to haul stuff. the body lift and the spacers would be about all you would need. The spacers would set the truck level then the body lift would give you a 3 inch lift. so you could easily get a 35 inch tire or 31 inch tire and have plenty of room to haul stuff.

sorry for the two posts but thought of this after i had posted. |

i prefer to stay away from body lifts... they have problems all thier own.. heck you could always just hack the fenders.. i know a 73-87 blazer with fiberglass fenders can run 35" tires with NO lift.

I'm not into the whole lifted 2WD thing but I have a few ideas that may or may not work.
First, when trying to get as low as possible, guys are notching their crossmembers to drop the frame into the front suspension. Why not try to do a spacer of some sort to lift the frame out of the crossmember. I know it wouldn't be quite that easy, but it's an idea. Second, I read , I believe in the FAQ section, that for a cheaper disc drake conversion for the 67-70 2WD, you could use (I believe) a 1970 3/4 ton lower control arm and your stock upper control arm to mount the balljoints for a 88 and up chevy truck. If this is true then you should be able to use a lift spindle for those model trucks..., correct? Again, I have NO idea if this will actually work, just trying to help you guys out with a fresh idea that could maybe be taken further with a little more thought.

smbrouss, the 88 spindle lift has been something i have been thinking about but havent had the time or money to put towards it.
except instead of a pre 72, i have an 82 that i just need the spindle lift for. No need to do it for the power brakes, but i realize using the 88+ brake calipers and pads. However and its weird i was just about to post my own thread about this. which i think i will do instead of continuing it here. Perhaps get more hits that way... |

Fabtech makes a lift coil for the 73-87 2wd trucks plus thier kit includes a b/j spacer. I am sure these two items would work on a 67-72. Aside from that there is not a whole lot you can do to lift a 2wd unless you go full custom. To my knowledge there are no lift spindles avail for these trucks...
If you have leaf springs in the back you can do an add a leaf or use lift blocks. If you have coils then you are pretty much limited to what you can do... If you want a lifted truck that bad I would sell your 2wd and get a 4x4 |

Re: Lift kits for 2wds?
New around here and have been away from the early Chevy trucks for a few years now (building a '64 Chevy II). However, just picked up a '70 Longhorn project.
Lifted my SWB '72 (sold several years back) approximately 6" by using 2" Rancho aftermarket coils and dropping the k-member 4". The complete front suspension stays in-tack this way, thus leaving the alignment alone, etc. If I remember correctly you do need to raise the motor mounts back to the stock location. All said and done the truck cleared 33" tires nicely. The rear of the '72 had leaf springs, so that was an easy deal. When I get a chance, I will try and get some pictures up. Been thinking of doing the same to my '70. Jeff |

Re: Lift kits for 2wds?
lets see... i have a 72 2wd 3/4ton truck and it Rolls on 36"tires
just get spacers on the coil springs(1ton) that gives you like 3" and get a body lift 3",=6" you may have to shave like 2 inches on the inner fender but the prerunner look Rocks |
