trans question

OK duh i found out the trans in my truck is not a th 350 but in fact a th400
The casing on the trans that came out of the truck has raised lettering HD on it.
Im putting in a junkyard trans and the one they handed me ( before i got mine out of the truck) was a short tail with the raised marking 4 on the bell housing. In addition the driveshaft yoke was bolted to the output shaft. I was told that the driveshaft i have ( slip on) will still work but the problem i have now is the tailshaft. Is it possible to just unbolt the tailshafts to convert the short tail to a long tail trany?
what is the difference between the HD stamp and the 4 stamp?
thanks in advance!

I think on the tail shaft issue you have to change the housing and output shaft requiring going thru the tranny. Not sure about the stamp issue. I would carry it back and get one with the correct tail shaft. Or rebuild your old one if $$ allows. I had a th350 rebuilt locally by a guy who builds race cars for $350 that included a new convertor, and shift kit. I think the 400 may be a little higher but not much.
