fuel gauge pegged
the fuel gauge is pegged past full what is wrong? anyone solve this problem?

did you just fill up?? sorry i had to. if there is 0 ohms of resistance then it will read empty (grounded) but if there is 90 ohms of resistance then it is full. now if there is infinate resistance then it would be pegged (broken wire)

I have at least 12gal of fuel so i will check for a bad wire. Thanks

check you fuse box. the wire going to the tank plugs into the fues box make sure it is still pluged in. if you unplug it the guage will run to fulltravel past full.
this makes it easy to add additional fuel tanks. all you need to do is remove this wire and put it on a switch with the other tanks (so you can select which one you are reading) and then run one wire to the fuse box.

most likely the wire is cut (or corroded) in half under the chrome trim in the door jamb.

Wow. This thread came back from the dead. And I'm glad it did cause my son's truck has the same problem. And I have wondered what I could do on my truck to read fuel levels in the saddle tanks. Since they don't have sending units in them, I guess this won't work for me. I'll just use them for 100 miles or so each, then switch back to the main.

this is an easy thing to fix/ modify.
all you need to do is get a universal sending unit from a parts store that is compatible with GM guages (i got mine from jc whittney,about 15 years ago). then wire it into the cab. find a place to mount a 3 position switch (one that has 3 terminals with the center being common). put the new sending unit wire on one end of the switch. find the wire in the fuse box (i believe it is orange) that is from the origional tank (it usually plugs into the box from the front). unplug it and plug it into the other end of the switch. now take a new wire from the center of the switch to the fuse box where you got the wire for the origional tank from. you are done... turn the switch one way and you read one tank, the other way you read the other tank...
