Rust Encapsulator ?
Has anyone ever used "Eastwood's" Rust Encapsulator before? I'm wanting to do the top side of my bed with some type of rust preventor. From what I have read about this stuff, it's supposed to stop any rust and primes the metal in one step.

I'm using it right now on my bed and some other areas of the truck.. I have not tried painting over it yet, nor can I say anthing about its long term effect. I can say it is a heck of a lot easier than POR to put on. Time will tell on the rest.

I've used it to do the entire frame on my truck after sandblasting. it has worked great. The frame sat outside in the snow all winter and it still looks great. Highly recommend

Yes, It works great. I painted over mine with chassis black. The only problem I had was in one area the black paint peeled off. My fault though, I used the wrong paint.

can you seal it with a primer sealer and use regular paint over it? i need to hit the corners near the kick panels in my cab.

i've never used it ..heard great things ... kinda leary painting over rust and hoping the product does what it advertises.... but i ordered a quart about a week ago .... eastwood says that no topcoat is nessasary .... if i do decide to .. what primer would be best ???

I'm pretty sure that one can primer-seal Rust Encapsulator since one can paint over it. Must b a common question, so the answer is no doubt on Eastwood's site somewhere. I used an aerosol can, so I can't speak to a QT's coverage.
I used Eastwood's old Corroles before and was satisfied but not impressed with its lack of UV protection and red color. I just used EW's newer Rust Encapsulator today in my K10's taillight pockets, lower rear quarters, and D-pillars (barn doors). I'm impressed with its coverage over both rust and metal. I have no idea how well it will stick. As an aside, I used silver Rust Encap. in the taillight pockets and D-pillars because the silver will reflect light better than black should, for instance, I need to work on the wiring harness. I think POR15 requires more prep but has greater film strength and would likely be superior in any location that sees standing, or long-drying, water since it is moisture curing and won't let water harm it, assuming nothing gets past it thru, say, a crack, scratch, or missed spot. I think the Rust encapsulator is easier to use and seems to seal rust well but with a lower film strength compared to POR15. The Rust Encapsulator has had many good reports on this board in the last month or so. I can only vouch for its ease of use and coverage. For the top of a pickup bed, I'd expect Rust Encapsulator would be similar in strength to enamel paint. I wonder if it would make a good rust sealer under a brush on or spray in bed liner?

What I'm after is to spray a bed liner in after sealing the light surface rust on it. That's why I am asking about this stuff. I'm not building a show truck, just a streeter......

It rocks socks. No prep like you need with POR, it's more resiliant to everything, you can paint over it like a primer and it lays down flat with minimal work. POR-15 is a pain in the ass.

I've seen a post on a Camaro forum POR15vs Rust Encapsulator and the Rust Encapsulator was the overwhelming choice. I'm going to use it on the posi rear I've got for my Z28.

OK, today the Rust Encapsulator I applied has dried (Doh!) and I had to wire wheel off a strip around a piece of flat metal I'm going to weld to the rear lower quarter's backing plate. I don't want the stuff to contaminate my welds.
Well, when I attacked the Rust Encapsulator with the 4" electric angle grinder (Makita) equipped with a carbon steel, knotted wire wheel (made in USA, BTW ![]() I forgot to say in my post above that I used black Rust Encapsulator on the rear lower quarter's backing plate. Because of the black color, I had to shine a light on the coated metal just to verify that I was making progress. After seeing little come off, I put some muscle into it. That's when I discovered that I could only take off the Rust Encapsulator from the high spots in the pitted metal. That stuff sticks well, to say the least. FWIW, I'm impressed. This stuff is way better than Eastwood's old Corroles. I don't think I'll ever use POR15 again unless I need incessant water protection or maybe for the axle housings. I may have to rethink that, as well, as I gain more experience with the Rust Encapsulator.

I used them all over my truck. I painted them with chasis black on my wheel wells about 6-7 months ago. So far so good. I like it when it dries up, to me it looks it reinforces the rested area.

I have used both and Im not so impressed with eastwood, I have ordered alot of stuff from them in the past and all I can say is its eye candy to me, looks good on the picture but,,,not so good when you get it home, POR has steps but its what type of metal you are applying on ie bare metal or rust. you can put it on both metals but if you want a nice finish they recommend prepping the metal, if you dont care put it on and go. I have done both and its all what you put into it is what the outcome will be, take the time prep the metal and its a nice finish, even pretty good for a brush, dont prep put it on and it was good but had a few fisheyed spots. Just make sure your wearing gloves cause just like the can says "if you let it dry on your skin the only remover is time"........

Just make sure you remove any loose rust and paint chips before applying.
