can i put this engine in a 1949 gmc
ok guys i am new to the forum , and a car novice, my dad is selling me a 1949 gmc truck in incredible shape, only thing missing are engine and transmission, one of my buddy's has a ford 460 engine "all done up" i was wondering if it was possible to put the ford engine into the 49 with off the shelf parts, my pop told me that the car is built up to accept a small block chevy engine right now. all body work has been completed, new 10 bolt rear, not an ounce of rust anywhere,

There will be of corse a issue with engine mounts! Headers will also be a concern along with the distance from the radiator to the water pump and the inlet hose on the rad. You will NOT however have a distributor to firewall issue. I am sure you will have to remove the crossmember under the firewall and fab a new one for your transmission. If they can put a Hemi in one of these pick ups I am sure you can put a Ford in one. Your weak link I think will be the rear end. Save your money and do it right, and don't forget about upgrading the brake system!!

so my uncle convinced me to just put a small block chevy 350 in it. so i wont need to convert anything over, having to do custom mounts and work, i am not prepared to do.
now does any one have any clue where to get a cheap and decent engine and trans. and do you think new or old, money is tight, so new does kinda appeal to me, and ill get on the road faster , however building my own engine also sounds like a good idea, as i know nothing about cars/engines at all, and i figure whats a better to learn (yes i will have help from a couple very competent mechs, the car/truck gene skipped a generation) frank |

Where are you located Frank? I, as well as others have good used engines that could be painted, gasketed, and dropped in to get you on the road. Then you could pick up a engine to build to your own specs while you enjoy your truck..........

that was the main reason i was looking at the ford 460 motor to begine with , my buddy has a 77 ford truck with that motor in it ,he was willing to sell the complete truck for 500 , body has lots of rust engine ran fine except for a coolant leak out of the the intake seal(a commom problem i found out in ford engines)
i am in pa , outside philly to be more precise, if someone has an engine an trans that works , please feel free to email me at s_d_cabinets@comcast.net and i'll let you know wether i am interested or not, or if i still need one or not thanks for teh quick reply gentlemen |
