Question about Detent Cable
In a continuing quest to "de-hotrod" the truck I took off the hands of my nephew, I have discovered there is no passing gear. According to the numbers, this truck came with a 305 engine with a TH400 transmission. The 305 was replaced with a 350 engine, and the TH400 was replaced with a TH350. I believe the TH400 had an electric passing gear, but I think the TH350 uses a detent cable. Am I right on this? There is no cable on this truck, so if this is so, then can I simply connect a detent cable from the carb to the trans to fix this problem? Is there any compatability issues I need to be aware of? Thanks for any advice folks.

Yes, the TH350 uses a cable, and they are fairly cheap. The only concern is if you have the correct bracket up by the carb to connect the cable-end and sleeve.

Could you expound on that bracket a little more? Does it mount to the manifold or to the carb? Is it still available from Chevy dealers or do you know where I might find one? Better yet, does anyone have a picture of the bracket? For all I know it might already be on the truck.

The one on mine bolts to the back two carb bolts, hangs off to the drivers side of the carb and has the square hole for the kick-down cable to runthrough, as well as the throttle cable and return spring. Sorry, don't have any pics.

you should be able to get a universal one. companies that make chrome dress up kits, chrome dipsticks, they should make a bracket that bolts to the carb or intake. Do you have Pep Boys, or Murrays or Autozone near you? Their products aren't the best, but they carry a lot of that chrome stuff. Hope this pic works.

I went out and checked again, and there is a bracket. In fact, there's two brackets. One is mounted to the two rear bolts holding down the carb as NeCrOmAnCeR said, and the other is a chrome one that is mounted further to the drivers side on the manifold. While poking around back there, lo and behold, I found the cable laying down on the trans up near the firewall! I pulled it out but I can't figure out which bracket to put it on. The chrome one sits further to the drivers side than the other, which is up pretty close to the carb. Also, I don't see any way to mount the cable to the carb. There doesn't seem to be any attaching point. It's times like these that I'd give anything for a digital camera. If anyone has a picture (a good detailed one) of the intake/carb area with the accelerator and detent cable hook up, I sure would appreciate it. Any other help greatly appreciated.
