Birightest Round Bulbs ?
I have a 79 chevy Stepside and I'm looking for the brightest headlights I can find to fit the original application.
Anyone know where to get the bright blue lights for this truck or something brighter ?

I think your limitation (and mine) will be the wiring capacity, not the bulbs. The best replacment in my opinion is the H6024ST Silverstar High Performance. I bought them at my local PepBoys, and I know they're available everywhere. To go with any higher wattage, you'll most likely need a wiring harness upgrade.

The sylvania Xtravisions are better than the Silverstars...and cheaper. They both use the same bulbs, the difference is the Silverstars are coated blue to make them appear more white. The blue coating blocks some of the light so you actually get less light output.

Well I called my local pep boys and they were out, so I called Kragen and they told me that the Silversatrs were # 6054 ?
Earl Filter is this the actual # for the bulbs that fit the round single headlights ?...... H6024ST Silverstar High Performance "Quote"

And to clarify, yes you need a 6024 part number. If your going to checkers [kragen, shucks, whatever] there are three choices for ya: 6024LL [long life] 6024XV [extra vision] and H6024ST [silverstars]

Silverstars are brighter and whiter (greater color temperature) than halogens, XtraVision, and Cool Blues. The drawback is that their life span is low and they are relatively expensive. My first set lasted a year, but I drove with them on as daytime running lights. I've changed my configuration, so I'll see how long they last this time around. You can compare the different headlights at the Sylvania web site.

Interesting...
The bulbs inside the Silverstar do have a blue tint to them. I suspect it's used to balance the color spectrum to produce a whiter light. Colors are more true under natural (white) light like sunlight. I suppose some of the cheaper lights use a blue film to attempt to accomplish the same effect. Hence, the heavy blue lighting effect. But, it's just a guess. According to Sylvania's marketing on their web site and the wording on their package, they claim Silverstars are the 'brightest' and 'whitest' and have 'the look of HID'. They're probably stretching 'the look of HID' claim, but they do look very white with just a 'tint' of blue and are very bright. I haven't seen Xtravisions first hand, but the Sylvania web site has comparison photos of their line of headlights. The Xtravisions do have a bit of a yellow look to them. Unfortunately, they don't list the lumen values for the Silverstars and Xtravisions for our trucks. But, for other models (i.e 9006s) they're very similar. The color temperature for Silverstars are about 800*K higher. I wonder how long it'll be until HID$ become common for these trucks.

I put a set of Sylvania Silverstars in my Jeep last winter. They've been great so far! I figured I'd give 'em a try when one of my old headlights burned out. After all, two round headlights are sure cheaper than the 4 square ones I've got on the Suburban, especially with a manufacturer's rebate...

I like the Silverstars
Wattage on bulb tells you little about the how much visible light it emits, it just tells you how much power it cosumes.
The lumen rating(amout of light) on the Silverstars is the same as the Xtravision even with the coating on the bulb, but the temperature(color) of the light is much different. I don't believe it is the same filament in both bulbs. I like the fact that the xtravision is cheaper and the life rating is much longer, however I like the look of the white light and I believe it enhances my ability to see much better. I am running them on both high and low beams. Occasionally Advance and PEP boys run rebate coupons on the Silverstars, they will save you a little cash, but the Silverstars are still relatively expensive.

How about an H4 conversion with high-powered bulbs. I've seen up to 130-watt brights (standard is 60w), but they do require relays. I had some Cibies with 100w brights, and they lit the road up really well. The 130w ones must be absolutely rude.

I did the H4 conversion in my '71 with the stock wattage bulbs and relays. Made a big difference. I think it was a Bosch kit. The beam pattern makes a big difference too. The low beam just cuts off, when viewed against a wall, etc., so I'd imagine they'd be less blinding to oncoming drivers if you upped the bulbs in them.
