Custom Door Panels?? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I was just wondering if anyone here has ever considered buying/building custom door panels for their 67-72? At the moment I have the stock plastic 72 door panels, but the style is pretty dated and I always bash my knuckles on them when trying to roll the window down.

I was thinking of buying the Roddoors dano door panels, but then I thought that I could likely build my own custom ones for much cheaper and have something truely unique. Has anyone ever tried this, and if so, what material did you use for the base of the panel and how thick was it. I've seen everything from wood to cardboard used, so I suppose almost anything would work. Also, how would a guy go about attaching it to the door? Epoxy the clips to the back of the new panel? I have my design all planned out with Orange tweed and white vinyl, but I still need to bring it into reality.

Billet aluminum inserts machined to replace tin foil, woodgrained, factory inserts. Rod Doors headliner covered in fabric.

Thanks for the help guys! The "How To" with the grey tweed is more the idea I'm going for, but I'll likely be using a combo of vinyl and tweed instead, plus adding an armrest of some sort.

And 70 402, got the wood backing traced out so far for kicks and that's been about it. I was going to start progress on them, but my car needed brakes and exhaust. Within the next couple of weeks I may do a bit more work to them. I haven't decided whether or not I'll make a few pair and sell them, but I've got all the diagrams and stuff if I do, so I guess I'll see how the first set goes and then decide from there. I'll make a post and let everyone know if I do.

I had custom door panels built out of fiberglass and covered them in leather. No pics yet because they are in a pile at the back of the shop with all the other finished interior peices but i think they turned out pretty well.

Heres mine. I took the factory panel and added the arm rest, and handle to open with from a 79 caddy. I also used the power windows and door locks from the caddy and mounted the switches in the arm rest where they were in the caddy. The flames were embroidered on.
