good price on '78 12 bolt
What is a good price on a 5 lug 12 bolt out from under a '78? I purchased one from my buddy with drums and all for $75. It seems to have about a 3.40 gear in it (by turning and counting) but I have not counted the # of teeth to see exactly what the ratio is. I figured when I tear up my 10 bolt under my '86 I'll rebuild the 12 bolt with new bearings, seals, 3.73 gear and posi. He had the old truck (wrecked) and I could not resist not getting the rear out from under it before it got junked. Maybe I didn't get jipped?

Most likely 3.42. If it is what you want, isn't broken or worn out, you can use it, you can afford it, sounds like you saved money, then it is a good deal. Plus you saved American Iron and recycled it to your truck.

Be sure you allow for changing the drive shaft. Using a 12-bolt requires a shaft about 3/4" longer than the same truck with a 10-bolt.

Did most of our trucks come with a ten bolt? My '86 is a ten bolt but the '70 was a twelve bolt?

There was an overlap. There can be 1981 10bolt and 1982 12bolts. GM used up stock until they were gone.
(For the 73-87s) 12bolts were 1973 - 1981 10bolts were 1981 - 1987
