Starting problem after engine heats up 305 - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

My 84, Silverado runs great except that once the engine is warmed up and you turn the ignition off it will not start again until it cools down. Will crank but sounds like the battery is low (not a bad battery - checked).
Starter coil is what i am considering replacing at this point, any ideas?

replace the starter, a reman is only 30 bucks. I had the same prob with a 305 in a 79 and it wound up being that the starter itself was getting hot and trying to short, replaced starter and had no more problems.

I agree with edman87. It sounds as if the starter is going bad.

If you have headers, wrap them up when you replace the starter to prevent the next failure.

wait a minute there fellas!!!!!!!when it gets to operating temperture,and you shut it off,does it do a hard crank?like does it turn over,pause,turn over,pause,only faster than i`m saying??????if so,you have way too much timing(advance)and it needs to be backed off(retarded)if you buy another starter,it will do the same thing unless you reset your timing.good luck!!

yea i had both problems with a car once. the cars timing was to high and the starter got hot. i would try looking at the timing first.

The older delco starters had a rear brass bushing that would hang up after the motor became hot and then subsequent starting was slow to drag. Bushings are still available and very easy to replace........................

You might also check your neg battery cable. My blazer did the same thing a few weeks back. I changed starter and battery and it still did it. I got the battery cable idea from a board member here. Works great now.

Ahhhh, the old GM hot start problems. Problem with them is when the starter motor gets hot, well it just wants to sit there and not do any thing but have a nice cold beer before they do any thing else!!!!!
