eaton rear questions?

Howdy all-

Just aquired a 70 k20 suburban w/ an eaton rear end, look like around 4.56 gears. I need to do some brake work and will be installing larger tires and hopefully some sort of traction device in the future. A point that has been brought up was parts availability... is it worth it to dump any money into this or should I just source out a 14b and put it in?

I'm having a hard time finding much info on this diff. Are there any lockers still available for it? I thought I saw someone advertising used take-out occasionally but I can't find there post. Saw another detroit for sale, are there different splines/carriers for these things? Are they a lunchbox locker like the 14b detroits, or do they require gear setup?

I can't drive my new sub till I fix the brakes, I'd appreciate any feedback/advice. Thanks!

The only locker available is the no-spin AKA detroit locker, unfortunately they are not made any more so only available used. It is exactly like a 14BFF detroit, seperate the case, remove spider/side gears, set in locker bolt case halves and ring gear back together, re-install. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=165458

I just set my gears back where they were.

I replaced a rear wheel cylinder on my 71, part was on the shelf @ napa.

Hey, Just responded to your thread in the other forum.

First of all Welcome to the board and second of all you are not supposed to post the same thread in multiple forums. Just a FYI and not getting on your case. You will find that there are enough knowledgable people on all forums on this board that you will find a pretty quick response to a question regardless of where you post it.

thanks for the welcome!
Sorry about the double post, wasn't sure if I'd have better luck in the drivetrain or 67-72 forums. Won't happen again!

Have you considered changing the rear axle from drums to discs? Now would be a good time to do it.

thats actually why I posted, figured I'd put discs on instead of dumping $200-300 into drums. Then I thought why put $$ into this diff if it's gonna be harder to get parts down the road, 14b stuff grows on trees.

Making sure that I have this right. The locker from a 14 bolt full floater will fit in the HO52, from what you say. Now for the big question. Will any other parts interchange, such as the carrier?

I think what he meant was that the disassembly was the same, ie. you can split the carrier and install a locker without changing the whole carrier, not that the locker would work. Allthough I thought I read somewhere that the complete carrier can be swapped between units as long as you use the coresponding axles, but I'm not sure about that. If anyone can shed some light on it I'd appreciate it.

Don't need to change the carriers, a 14Bff detroit locker as I understand will fit in an Eaton carrier and then you just use 14Bff axle shafts.

What I am wondering about is a way to get better gears in an HO52. I have 4.10s and would like to go with 3.70 or 3.42. I don't want to have to swap the entire differential, can't get a 14 bolt narrow enough to fit under my 52.

Fred T, Nothing better than aftermarket 3.90s. And I don't think they are made anymore either.

I just tried to get 3.90's from Randys ring and pinion and they do not have them anymore. I was disappointed but then I found a used 4.10 center section and to tell you the truth I am kinda missing the 5.14's. It is a 6000lb truck after all.

Is 63" too wide? A cab and chassis 14B is 63" wide from the factory, that is NARROW for a fullsize axle, about 4" narrower than the usual fullsize stuff.
