700R4 question
I just acquired a 700R4 out of a mid 80's van... It came with only the detent cable... I am planning on changing the fluid, filter and adding a shift kit to it and buying a new converter.
How do you wire up the valve body to lock up the converter? It seems like I read somewhere that you wire the solenoids up a certain way to run off of one 12v wire? If so does anyone know how or where to get the directions for this? Thanks, Bryan

There are several kits available to make the converter lock up. The Painless wiring kit has a pressure sensor that locks up the converter. B&M and Ron Francis have a speed sensor that locks it up. I only know of people using the speed sensor. You mount an adjuster in your cab and you adjust the speed that the converter will lock and unlock at. Usually about 45, depends on your gearing.

I really dont know if I want something in the cab that controls the lock up.. I think I would rather just have the pressure sensor to control it all..
I will check out the painless wire kit...

Don't forget to get a TV cable.
Once you have it all put together, I would go to a large tranny shop, and have them put the oil pressure guages on it to ensure the cable adjustment is perfect. These trannys are very picky, and self destruct with little to no notice when the cable is misadjusted. |

Hey check out my post on torque convertors. Bigvinnie put a link on there to a site that has a switch that integrates your brake switch to turn the convertor off. I am sure they have an automatic switch to turn it on too.

Since you will have it apart, talk to the guys at 700r4.com. They can provide you with directions so that you set up your TV cable correctly. When you have the pan off, it is fairly easy.
I use the Painless wiring kit and a vacuum pressure sensor and a brake switch (replaces the existing one). It will only lock up in overdrive when there is sufficient vacuum (engine not under significant load) and unlocks when the brakes are applied. I'm thinking there should be a relay in the circuit though to offload some of the amps on the ignition system.

You also have the option of going with a non-lockup converter. This is the route I went and 40K later, I have no complaints. I prefer to keep things simple.

I will keep thinking and digging on this issue...
I will be running 3.08 gears at first so I will have to wait and see, will probably go up to a 3.55 gear soon.... Thanks for all your help...
