Fan Shroud Help

ok guys when i go around a corner in my truck the fan rubs on the shroud and sounds like absolute crap. i plan on going electric fan soon. but i was wandering if i can just snatch the shroud off for the time being. dad tells me its not a good idea cause itll make it overheat. whats your guyses thoughts

Your dad is right. Question is, what is allowing enough flex for the fan to contact the shroud? Broken motor mounts?

My truck doesnt have a shroud and it doesnt overheat. 180 thermostat and 18" flex fan. It does run up to 200 degrees but then right back down to 180. Cant imagine that it is as hot there as it is here in Central Cali. 100+ here and I can drive mine without shroud.
But I do agree with Stocker, Why does the fan hit the shroud?? Better find out before it does damage to something.

Look at your motor mounts...look clo9sely. I'd bet my lunch money you have a kerfagled motor mount. And it is VERY important since you have a throttle ROD instead of cable. This is why they went to a cable in 71, and new style motor mounts later. The engine would tilt, and bind the throttle and cause a runaway condition...no fun. I had it happen in millitary equipment and it'll make you pee your self. There was actually a recall on this.
As for running without a shroud, it all depends.
You may be running at the edge of controlling the eng temp right now. if you are, you'll lose that controll and start overheating at low speeds. Odds are, if your rad is good and your pump is still good, you'd be ok without it.
You'd be better off to fix the motor mount or what ever is causing it to rub.

Andy, that happened to me decades ago in my fairly quick (327/365) 1965 Corvette, and it certainly can get your attention! Nail it in first (or second or third for that matter) and it stayed WFO until you hit the clutch - luckily, that would release the throttle. Ahhh, memories....

I run my 71 without a fan shroud. It has a 180 thermostat and it rarely hits the 200 mark.

I agree with your dad but if those guys are not overheating (especially in Central California) then you might be able to get by but...you still have a problem. I agree with the motor mounts. The good thing is your truck will probably drive smoother after you change the motor mounts and they don't cost much.
If you are going to an electric fan check with Wes to see what he has to offer. Wes is very sharp about how a cooling system functions.

Oh noooo, they come stock! Look under an all original 200,000 mile old truck...I'll bet they are the kerfagled ones.
under the new chevy trucks, you'll notice them at a much lower mileage...which is odd... the old unsafe motor mounts last longer than the new and improved ones...hmmm....

I run a 4 core radiator out of a 71 burb and it is alot bigger than stock and all I have is a small 12 inch electric fan. no problems here

It will be your drivers side mount too. It might look alright at first glance. Have someone start the truck, stand on the brakes and tap the gas pedal. You should be able to see the engine lift if the rubber has sperated from the metal or if it has just gotten soft. If by some odd chance it isn't that one. Put it in reverse and try it again this time looking at the passenger side mount.
