Steering Column Questions

Are there any differences in the steering columns between 73-80, or should any 73-80 column fit any 73-80 truck? The reason I ask is I sold a column on eBay to a guy who claims it won't fit his truck because the column actually only fits a 73-77 and not 73-80. He stated that it should have a solid shaft and this one is splined. I thought they were all splined. So, can anyone clarify this for me?

There is a difference, some are splined (the early years), and some are solid that slide into each other and are secured with a bolt thru them. If you can get the matching intermediate shaft, then you should be fine.

Also, keep in mind, the wiring harness pigtails changed thruought the years, as did the location of the wipers (dash vs. column mounted).

So, will an intermediate shaft off a 73 fit a steering box for a 79-80? If so then an earlier column could possibly be used on a later (79-80) truck. Right?

Yes, it will. The length has never changed. The wiring changed in 77 or 78, but the plug can be swapped. The wiring is in the exact same order, but the plug is different.

Just get the fellow the correct steering shaft to steering box connection, that'll make him happy. If he has wiring issues, you can also get him a turn signal switch for the right wiring type. They are dirt cheap, and very easy to change in both a tilt, and regular column.

Thanks for the input guys. Now, does anyone happen to have an extra splined intermediate shaft they would want to part with? If so, how much? I'll get the buyer in contact with you if you do. I did have two laying around the garage, but I must have thrown them out at some time. Thanks.
